Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

(1)

In the below screenshot the vehicle selected is EV_defaults_in. The Cargo load is entered as 500 kg and the rest specifications used are default data.

In the Drive cycle, the type used is FTP as mentioned in the question.

Number of Cycles = 5.

And the Time step = 1.

As shown in the statistics that has not covered a distance of 45 km by default conditions because of multiple reasons such as

  • The distance covered is found to be 41.4 km.
  • The Power capacity of the battery used is less i.e. 25 kWh.
  • The Warning of the simulation also says the "Required distance exceeded EV range"
  • The cargo weight is much higher as compared to the prescribed or generalized weight.
  • The SoC of the battery is also decreasing due to the high value of torque and power supply demand because of the weight of the vehicle.
  • The gasoline equivalent is found to be 2.5 units.
  • The Gradeability is also obtained to be 88.5 kmph at 6%.
  • The acceleration test shows no result in 0 - 137 kmph slot.

In this question, the energy storage (battery) capacity was asked to change keeping the rest of the parameters the same to check whether there is any change in outputs.

The following screenshot shows that the battery capacity was increased to 40 kWh. This was to check is increasing the battery capacity increases the distance covered from that of 41.4 km in 1st question.

Keeping the drive cycle same as FTP as in question 1.

Number of cycles = 5.

And the Time step = 1.

5

The change in battery capacity has shown positive outcomes that, the EV has now covered 64.5 km which is higher than that of the case of question 1.

  • One of the main reasons was that with an increase in the battery capacity the SoC plot as shown below went up to 8600 sec (approx) which was 5500 sec (approx) than in the first case.
  • This gave EV more time to move and elongated the drive cycle hence more distance is covered.
  • The gasoline equivalent is found to be 2.6 units, 0.1 units higher than the first case.
  • The Gradeability is also obtained to be 88.5 kmph at 6%.
  • The acceleration test shows high-speed results i.e. for the speed slot of 0 - 137 kmph the results are obtained in this case as compared to the first case.

PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in

The simulation was tested by changing the parameters mentioned in the table in the column of Conditions.

As analyzing the outputs of the simulation changing the sources i.e. All sources enabled, Fuel cell disabled and Energy storage disabled.

The SoC limits for the energy storage was kept at 1 and 0.45.

S no. Conditions Distance covered (km) Fuel consumption (L/100 km) HC CO NOx PM
1 All system enabled 88.8 5.2 0.255 0.289 0.099 0.00
2 Keeping constant road Grade = 1.5% 88.8 6.8 0.275 0.33 0.135 0.00
3 Applying Cycle filter at 3 sec 88.8 5 0.253 0.283 0.095 0.00
4 Indian Highway Drive cycle 88.8 5.2 0.255 0.289 0.099 0.00

Condition no. 1

Condition no. 2

Condition no. 3

Condition no. 4

Conclusion :

  • The gradeability test was done at 88.5 kmph at a 6% grade.
  • Seeing conditions 1 and 2 we can see a major difference in the emissions. In case of no constant road grade the emission was found to be lesser than that of constant road grade at 1.5%.
  • The fuel consumption (L/100 km) also increased with adding the constant road grade from 5.2 to 6.8 L/100 km.
  • Also after analyzing condition 3 where the feature of cycle filter is applied shows approximately similar results as that of condition 1.
  • As we can see in condition 4 that changing the drive cycle to India Highway sample (CYC_INDIA_HWY_SAMPLE) from CYC_FTP in conditions 1, 2 and 3. The data shows same outputs for condition 1 and 4 with same sources condition i.e. All systems enabled.
