Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

1.AIM:

  • Using ADVISOR tool estimate the range of EV_default with a cargo mass of 500kg.

ADVISOR TOOL:

Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR) was first developed in November 1994 at the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory. It was designed as an analysis tool to assist the US Department of Energy (DOE) in developing technologies for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) through the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Propulsion System contracts with Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler. Its primary role is to highlight the system-level interactions of hybrid and electric vehicle components and their impacts on the vehicle performance and fuel economy.

ADVISOR was created in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. MATLAB provides an easy-to-use matrix-based programming environment for performing calculations while Simulink can be used to represent complex systems graphically using block diagrams. ADVISOR uses three primary graphical user interface (GUI) screens to guide the user through the simulation process. With the GUIs, the user can iteratively evaluate the impacts of vehicle parameters and drive cycle requirements on the vehicle performance, fuel economy, and emissions. The GUIs facilitate interaction with the raw input and output
data that is present in the MATLAB workspace. The vehicle model is depicted graphically using Simulink block diagrams to define the connections between components. The model then reads the input data from the MATLAB workspace during the simulation and outputs the results to the workspace to be viewed in the results window.

STEPS:

  • Add the ADVISOR folder to curent matlab working folder and run advisor.m file
  • It will open an GUI select the metric system.
  • For this study choose EV_default from drop down menu and change cargo mass as 500kg continue.
  • Next we want to choose the drive cycle as given in question i choose FTP drive cycle which gives a plot of velocity vs time for a distance of 17.7 km, but we want to check the EV with 500kg cargo for 45km so we choose 3 FTP cycles and continue.
  • next increasing battery module to 30.

OBSERVATIONS:

  • The EV_default with a cargo mass of 500kg and 25 module of lead acid cell will cover on a distance of 41.4km and the SOC at 41.4km is 0%.
  • The EV_default with a cargo mass of 500kg and 27 module of lead acid cell will cover on a distance of 44.8km with SOC of 0%.
  • The EV_default with a cargo mass of 500kg and 30 module of lead acid cell will cover on a distance of 49.1km with SOC of 8-10% after 45km.

3.AIM:

  • To Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file and compare the results.

STEPS:

  • Load the adisor.m file in matlab and choose the metric system.
  • Select the PIRUS_JPN_default from the dropdown menu and leave everything as default.
  • Next select the drive cycle, i choose the FTP cycle.
  • TO perform gradeability test select the gradeablity test option and choose the parameter you want to test.

PIRUS-JPN GRADEABLITY TEST COMPARISION
GRADEABLITY PARAMETER SET VALUE RESULTS RESULT VALUE
speed(kmph) 16.1 Greadablity 33.70%
speed(kmph) 32.2 Greadablity 22.90%
speed(kmph) 40 Greadablity 19%
speed(kmph) 49 Greadablity 17.70%

RESULT:

  • As we see when speed increases the gradeablity percentage decreases ie when slope is high then our speed must be lower to climb the hill in order to achive the torque required.
