Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Aim: Use ADVISOR tool and simulate
Objective:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.
Introduction:
ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
The models in ADVISOR are:
- mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and
- quasi-static, using data collected in steady state (for example, constant torque and speed) tests and correcting them for transient effects such as the rotational inertia of drivetrain components.
ADVISOR was preliminarily written and used in November 1994. Since then, it has been modified as necessary to help manage the US DOE Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion System subcontracts. Only in January 1998 was a concerted development effort undertaken to clean up and document ADVISOR.
Advisor tool has 3 window first one is vehicle input second is drive cycle input and last is output result window.

Que 1: For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
Ans: Open advisor tool first and load EV_defaults_in from the drop down menu and change parallel_defaults_in to EV_defaults_in from vehicle input window.

Then in second window update the drive cycle condition using drop down menu.
After pressing on Run button we get the output window.
Result With 1 drive cycle.

Here the distance covered is 17.8km and almost 40% battery is used.
Result With 2 Drive Cycle:
Here the distance covered is 35.5km and almost 80% battery is used.
Result With 3 Drive Cycle:

Here the distance covered is 41.4km and 100% battery is used.
The minimum distance covered by this vehicle is 17.8 km and the maximum is 41.4 km which consume 100 % battery in 3 drive cycle.
Therefore,EV_default cannot travel a distance 45 km due to insufficient SOC.
Que 2: In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
Ans: Here we will change the No. of battery used and control the power rating.

1.Energy storage system with 26 module and 2 drive cycle:

Output:

2.Energy storage system with 27 module and 2 drive cycle:

Output:

3.Energy storage system with 28 module and 2 drive cycle:

Output:

Here with 2 drive cycle though we increase the battery module the total distance covered is constant in all the cases because here we have charging left in the battery but the drive cycle is completed.
Now lets check with 3 drive cycle.
1. Energy storage system with 26 module and 3 drive cycle:

Output:

2. Energy storage system with 27 module and 3 drive cycle:

Output:

3.Energy storage system with 28 module and 3 drive cycle:

Output:

Here at last trial as we increase to 28 module of batteries with 3 drive cycle we got a range of 46.3 km with 100% battery consumed.
Que 3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.
Ans:
- In advisor tool move to first window vehicle input window select PRIUS_Jpn and press on continue.
- we will move on next window where we will select gradibility test and click on grade option.
- Select 30 mph speed and time 10 sec and click on ok and the run the mode then we compare the results.

Result:
Time = 10 sec and Speed = 30mph

Gradeability is 14.7%
Time = 10 sec and Speed = 40mph

Gradeability is 11.7%
Time = 10 sec and Speed = 50mph

Gradeability is 9.7%
From the above result we can say that as we increase the speed of vehicle the gradeability goes on decreasing.
