Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

ADVISOR tool - Advance Vehicle Simulator

  • A steady-state model which uses backward flow, that is from drive cycle - energy storage block.
  • It is created by Matlab scripts and mostly lookup tables.
  • rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of the conventional, electric, hybrid, fuel cell, and hydrogen-based models.
  • vehicle models rely on the actual laboratory results of various components.

1. AIM

  • To check whether the vehicle can travel for 45 km with the FTP drive cycle by altering the cargo mass of 500 kg with all other default conditions for EV_defaults_in file using the advisor tool.

EXPLANATION

  • Open the Matlab and select the advisor folder path.
  • enter advisor in the command window and the advisor tool opens.
  • select metric units and click start

  • then select EV_defaults_in load file
  • change the cargo mass to 500

  • then select CYC_FTP in drive cycle

  • the # of cycles given is 1
  • then click RUN

  • from the above figure, we can say that for 1 cycle, the distance travelled is 17.8 km
  • the state of charge seems to be dropped from 1 - 0.6, (100 - 60 = 40% battery used).
  • to check whether the vehicle can travel up to 45 km, I am adding the # of cycles to 2 and then click RUN.

  • here the distance travelled is 35.5 km
  • the state of charge seems to be dropped to almost 0.1, (100 - 10 = 90 % battery used).
  • then again adding # of cycles to 3 and click RUN.

  • here the distance traveled is 41.4 km
  • from the soc graph, we can say that the battery is drained off completely.
  • there is also a warning message, Required distance exceeded EV range (implies that the distance 41.4 km have exceeded the EV range for the given conditions).
  • from the above observation, we can conclude that the vehicle cannot travel for 45 km.

RESULT

  • Thus for the cargo mass of 500 kg and default conditions with the FTP drive cycle for EV_defaults_in file using the advisor tool is analyzed.

2. AIM

  •  To change the battery capacity and repeat the simulation for the above case.

EXPLANATION

  • The battery capacity is changed from 25 (above case) to 35 in # of mod

1. # of cycle = 1

  • distance traveled 17.8 km
  • state of charge dropped from 1 to 0.7 (100 - 70 = 30 % battery used)

2. # of cycle = 2

  • distance traveled 35.5 km
  • state of charge dropped from 1 to 0.4 (100 - 40 = 60 % battery used)

3. # of cycle = 3

  • distance traveled 53.2 km
  • state of charge dropped from 1 to almost 0 (100 % battery used)

4. # of cycle = 4

  • distance traveled 56.5 km
  • The battery seems drained off completely
  • warning message - Required distance exceeded EV range.

so from the above,

  • The maximum distance by the vehicle with 35 # of module (charging capacity) should be 53.2 km which is achieved with 3 number of cycles.
  • Hence the vehicle can travel for 45 km with the FTP drive cycle by altering the cargo mass of 500 kg and the battery capacity of 35 modules with all other default conditions for EV_defaults_in file.

RESULT

  • Thus the battery capacity has been changed and the simulation has been repeated for the above case and the results are observed.

3. AIM

  • To perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

EXPLANATION

  • Open advisor tool
  • select  PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in load file.
  • Click CONTINUE
  • check gradeability check box and select grade option

  • in the grade test advanced option, we can vary the speed and change the hybrid, engine, or only electric by enable/disable systems.
  • click ok and then RUN.
  • repeat the steps for various options

  • we will get results like the above figure, gradeability at 93.6 km/h  is 1.5 %
  • the speeds are varied for three systems (all systems enabled, energy storage disabled, fuel convertor disabled) and tabulated.

  • from the above table, we could conclude that with the decrease in speed there is an increase in gradeability and vice versa.

RESULT

  • Thus gradeability test for the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file is performed and results are tabulated.
