Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM: For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
What is ADVISOR: NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles.
ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
What ADVISOR Offers:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles.
- learn about how conventional, hybrid or electric vehicles use / lose energy.
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter, etc.
Terms Used:
Federal Test Procedure-FTP: commonly known as FTP-75 for the city driving cycle, are a series of tests defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to measure tailpipe emissions and fuel economy of passenger cars (excluding light trucks and heavy-duty vehicles).
Procedure:
- Type Advisor on matlab command window to open Advisor Tool.
- Load EV_default_in file fom "Load File" section.
- While keeping All parameters default put Cargo Mass equal to 500kg.
- Continue to next page by clicking on "continue" button.
- Sellect the drive cycle_FTP(Federal Test Procedure) form "Drive Cycle" option.
- Finally Run the Simulation for Testing Results.
1. Selecting EV_default_in from Advisor Tool.

2. Putting Cargo Mass equal to 500kg

3. Sellecting FTP drive Cycle.

FTP Drive Cycle & Statistics:
We can see in drive cycle time taken to complete cycle is 2477 and Distance travelled is 17.77 km, where as max. speed is 91.25 kmph and avg. speed is 25.82 kmph. More details provided in Statistics Section.
In CYC_FTP also can observe that atleat 42% of times speed of vehicle lies between 0-10 kmph.

Result Figure:

The distance travelled by vehicle is 17.77 km in one drive cycle which consume 40% of SOC, as can be Seen from fist Two graph. Similarly, if we increaase the drive cycle Distance and SOC changes accordingly i.e. 35.5 km with SOC of 80%. And maximum distance travel by vehicle is about 41.4 km in 3 drive cycle. therefore vehicle can not travel 45 km with such given parameter and condition.
AIM: In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
In this case changing bettery from 25 to 40 modules and repeating the Simulation.

As we incresing the battery module the Weight of battery also incresing which increase the total weight. Fig. shows the diffrerence of mass.

This time for one drive cycle battery percentage or SOC fall to 73% and other parameters remains unchanged, such as max. speed, avg speed, distance in one cycle.

If we run it for 4 number of drive cycle we find SOC is fall to zero after 65.5 km of distance(after 8600sec).

therefore, Maximum distance can travel in this condition is 65.5 km, in 4 drive cycles.
AIM: Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file and Compare your results in table and conclude.
Toyota Prius is a full hybrid electric automobile manufactured by Toyota,
UDDS-The EPA Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) has been developed for chassis dynamometer testing of heavy-duty vehicles.
Procedure:
- Type Advisor on matlab command window to open Advisor Tool.
- Load PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file fom "Load File" section.
- While keeping All parameters default Continue to next page by clicking on "continue" button.
- Taken default drive cycle which is CYC_UDDS.
- Gradeabiity is also taken into count.
- Finally Run the Simulation for Testing Results.
1. Sellecting Prius_jpn_default_in.

2. Gradeability is taken into Consideration.

This is the Gradeability condition is considered, keeping all parameters default.

Duty cycle & Statistics:
This is defaut duty cyce which is UDDS of one cycle and statistics. Time to complete one duty cycle is 1369 sec, and distance travel 12 km with top speed of 91.25 kmph and avg. speed of 31.51 kmph as can be seen on statistics with other details.

3. Result Analysis.

This is what is see after running, While distance covered is 12 km in almost 1200 sec SOC remains 50% or SOC fall to 50%.
Gradeability test result for default vaue are.

And for better undrstanding of relation between gradebility and speed we have change the apeed from 55 to 65, 75, 80 mph which have following test results.

So while comparing conclusion is that, while increase in speed gradeability is decreases or we can also conclude at lower speed vehicles gradeability increases, which shown below.

This is the result when speed is 80.5 kmph the gradeability of vehicle is increases i.e. 2%. That is why generally vehicles are design to run at one by third of top speed while grading.
