Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

AIM:

  • For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
  • In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
  • Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.

Advisor Tool:

ADVISOR, NREL'S Advanced Vehicle Simulator, is a set of model, data, and script. text files for use with MATLAB and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modelling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.

Benefit of Advisor tool: -

Estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built.

Learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains.

Compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles.

Evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle's fuel converter optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.

For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

First, we load Ev Defaults in file to advisor tools and load cargo mass 500k

And select the ftp drive cycle .

Here the distance travelled by the vehicle for the first drive cycle is shown . which is 17.17 km.

First drive cycle result as shown above. And in 17.7 km the 40% battery is used.

In second drive cycle the vehicle travelled 35.5 km and the battery is used 84%. So in this second cycle the vehicle cannot reached the target.

Third Drive Cycle: -

Distance covered by the third drive cycle is 41.4kmand 100% of battery is used before the total cycle ends. So the total distance covered by the ev defaults is 41.4km. Hence vehicle can’t achieved the target.

2) In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

As shown in figure the battery module is 26

First Drive cycle

Third drive cycle:-

As shown in figure the battery module is 28.

First Drive Cycle:-

Third Drive Cycle: -

As per observation the battery module of 28 covered the distance of 46.3 km.

3) Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.

Compare your results in table and conclude.

We change the gradeability at 2 and the speed is 35mph for 10 sec

We change the gradeability at 1.5 and the speed is 40mph for 15 sec

We change the gradeability at 1.8 and the speed is 72.4kmph for 10 sec

From my observations the gradeability changes with respect to time .

Conclusions:-

  • Distance covered by the third drive cycle is 41.4kmand 100% of battery is used before the total cycle ends. So the total distance covered by the ev defaults is 41.4km. Hence vehicle can’t achieved the target.
  • As per observation the battery module of 28 covered the distance of 46.3 km.
  • The gradeability changes with respect to time .
