Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM - To Use a ADVISOR Tool For Simulating the given condition .
OBJECTIVE -
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. To Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.
THEORY -:
ADVISOR TOOL -
ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
We may benefit from using ADVISOR if we want to:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
The models in ADVISOR are:
- mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and
- quasi-static, using data collected in steady state (for example, constant torque and speed) tests and correcting them for transient effects such as the rotational inertia of drivetrain components.
ADVISOR was preliminarily written and used in November 1994. Since then, it has been modified as necessary to help manage the US DOE Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion System subcontracts. Only in January 1998 was a concerted development effort undertaken to clean up and document ADVISOR.
Since then, over 4500 individuals have downloaded one or more versions of ADVISOR, including all of the OEMs and major suppliers. About 2/3 of the users are from industry and 1/3 from universities. A short list of major ADVISOR users includes:
- DaimlerChrysler
- Ford Motor Company
- General Motors Corp.
- Delphi Automotive Systems
- Visteon
- and hundreds of others
Solution For Objective - 1
For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle.

In the above figure I have Load the EV_defaults_in with the help of drop down menu. Also the Cargo weight taken is 500 KG,this wii\ll also change the overall calculated mass of the vehicle.Ev Drive train is used ,and also the Battery Capacity is 25 KW.

Drive Cycle is changed to FTP using dropp down menu.
RESULTS -
When only #1 drive cycle is used the Result obtained is -

From the above result it is concluded that the Vehicle wiil run only 17.8 km when #1 drive cycle used.
- Taking the #2 drive cycle .

It is concluded that the distance travelled by vehicle is 35.5 km.When the number of cycle is increased by #2.
- Increasing the number of drive cycle to #3.

From the above figure it is concluded that the vehicle will cover a distance of 41.4 km when drive cycle is increased to #3. Also battery is drying as we can see that Warning Message is showing in Red Color.
- Increasing the number of cycles to #4.

Further increasing the cycle it is concluded that the maximum velocuty attend by car will be 41.4 KM . Battery will dry 100%.
CONCLUSION -
Final conclusion comes out that vehicle cannot travel 45 km With FTP Drive cycle as Battery of the vehicle will dry 100% .
Solution For Objective -2
- Changing the battery capacity - 27 kw

From above figure it is concluded that using battery capacity of 27 kw the maximum distance travelled by car for #4 drive cycle will be 44.8 km which less than the 45 km . As Warning is still showing that is battery dried completely 100%.
- Changing the battery capacity - 29 KW

CONCLUSION -
From above figure it is concluded that if we increase the battery capacity and also the number of FTP drive cycle , the vehicle will travel more and more distance.
Solution For Objective 3 -
- Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.
Default Model of TOYOTA PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_

- Performing Gradeability Test By Taking Different Grades -
1.For 20 mph or 32.2 kmph - Greadeability is 19.8%

2. For vehicle speed 30 mph or 48.3 kmph
Greadeability is 14.7 %

3.For vehicle speed 40 mph or 64.4 kmph
Greadeability = 11.7%

4. For 50 mph or 80.5 kmph
Greadeability = 9.7 %

5. For 60 mph or 96.6 kmph
Greadeability = 8.1%

Greadeability Test Result Table -

CONCLUSION -
From the above table it is concluded that as the speed of vehicle increases the Greadeability of vehicle is going to decrease .
