Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

AIM:

To use the ADVISOR TOOL AND SIMULATION

OBJECTIVES:

1. Using EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, To find whether the vehicle can travel for 45 km

with FTP drive cycle? and To Conclude observations.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. To Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. To compare results in the table and conclude.

INTRODUCTION:

ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink.

It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides

a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms

from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.

  • You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:

1. estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built

2. learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains

3. compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles

4. evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter

5. optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.

  • The models in ADVISOR are:

1. mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and

2. quasi-static, using data collected in steady state (for example, constant torque and speed) tests and correcting them for transient effects

such as the rotational inertia of drivetrain components.

ADVISOR was preliminarily written and used in November 1994. Since then, it has been modified as necessary to help manage

the US DOE Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion System subcontracts. Only in January 1998 was a concerted development effort undertaken to clean up and document ADVISOR.

Since then, over 4500 individuals have downloaded one or more versions of ADVISOR, including all of the OEMs and major suppliers.

About 2/3 of the users are from industry and 1/3 from universities. A short list of major ADVISOR users includes:

1. DaimlerChrysler

2. Ford Motor Company

3. General Motors Corp.

4. Delphi Automotive Systems

5. Visteon

6. and hundreds of others.

How To start ADVISOR Tool:

. Launch MATLAB and first set default location folder to the advisor.

. Now in the command window of MATLAB type “advisor” and press enter.

. A new window will open and then set “metric” for unit and start ADVISOR.

. It will launch in a new window.

Advisor tools have 3 windows:

1. Vehicle Input window

2. Simulation Parameter window

3. Results window

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

First, loading EV_defaults_in from the drop-down menu and changing Parallel_default_in to EV_defaults_in from Vehicle Input window.

Now changing the cargo mass to 500 kg

Change in the total mass of the vehicle can be seen.

Clicking on the continue button after that a new window simulation parameter will pop up.

In Simulation Parameter window change drive cycle to CYC_FTP by selecting the drop-down menu.

Below that we will see of cycles from here we can set our drive cycle.

  • pressing the RUN button, the simulation will start and it will show results in a new window

  • distance traveled by the vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 17.8km. Used almost 40% SOC.
  • Increasing no. of drive cycles to 2.

  • Result 2nd drive cycles:

  • distance traveled by the vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 35.5km. Used almost 80% SOC.
  • Increasing no. of drive cycles to 3:

  • Results 3rd drive cycles:

  • distance traveled by the vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 41.4km. Used almost 100% SOC.
  • The minimum distance travel by car is 17.8 km with drive cycle CYC_FTP – 1 whereas the maximum distance travel by car is 41.4 which consumes 100% of battery in 3 Drive cycles.

: Therefore EV_default cannot travel distance of 45 km due to insufficient SOC.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

.In-Vehicle Input window we will change the capacity of battery form energy storage which will be open in 1st

. “#of mod /V nom” describes the battery capacity, so we will change the module number of batteries from the first box

and we will see that changes in voltage and weight of the battery.

1.Energy Storage System with 26 modules and 2 drive cycles:

DRIVE CYCLE:

OUTPUT:

2. Energy Storage System with 27 modules and 2 drive cycles:

OUTPUT:

1. Energy Storage System with 26 modules and 3 drive cycles:

2. Energy Storage System with 27 modules and 3 drive cycles:

OUTPUT:

  • Drive cycle-2 Drive cycle-3

Battery model voltage battery-weight km Battery model voltage battery-weight km

26 321 286 35.5 26 321 286 42.7

27 321 286 35.5 27 321 286 44.8

28 321 286 35.5 28 321 286 46.3

Battery modules 28 and with 3 drive cycles, the distance traveled is 46.3km.

1. While changing the battery module in drive cycle 2 we get constant distance travel.

2. Changing the battery module in drive cycle 3 we get changes in distance travel by vehicle.

3. To cover 45km distance a 28 module 345-volt battery is required.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in the table and conclude.

In ADVISOR tool Vehicle Input window select PRIUS_Jpn_default model.

Continue to the next window.

Simulation Parameter window will open.

Select the gradeability test and click on the grade Option box, a new dialogue box will open.

In grade option box we can change speed or duration with respect to our simulation.

So, for this simulation, I change speed one time and duration another time.

Results for the duration - 10sec

i) Speed - 20 miles/h or 32.2 kmph

Gradeability = 19.8%

2. Speed - 30 miles/h or 48.28 kmph

Gradeability =14.7%

3. Speed - 40 miles/h or 64.37 kmph

Gradeability =11.7%

Results for the duration - 20sec:

i) Speed - 20 miles/h or 32.2 kmph

Gradeability = 22.9%

2. Speed - 30 miles/h or 48.28 kmph

Gradeability = 17.7%

3. Speed - 40 miles/h or 64.37 kmph

Gradeability = 14.6%

  • DURATION-10SEC DURATION-20SEC

S.NO VEHICLESPEED MPH VEHICLESPEED KMPH GRADEABILITY S.NO VEHICLESPEED MPH VEHICLESPEED KMPH GRADEABILITY

1 20 32.2 19.8% 1 20 32.2 22.9%

2 30 48.3 14.7% 2 30 48.3 17.7%

3 40 64.4 11.7% 3 40 64.4 14.6%

CONCULSION:

From the above tables, it can be seen that when vehicle speed increases there is a decrease in gradeability for both 10sec and 20sec duration.

when vehicle speed increases there is a decrease in gradeability.
