RailWheel and Track Analysis (ANSYS WORKBENCH)

AIM :

To simulate the Railwheel and track for their Lifecycle and the Equivalent Stress,Equivalent Strain and Total Deformation provided by the wheel running on the track by the given forces.

Case 1 : Multiply the bearing load by 5 times and compare the result with load of 100KN. Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and Life cycle under both the loads.

Case 2 : Implement a User-defined result and calculare the Total Deformation from this result and check if its the same as that obtained by the Ansys for a load of 100KN.

FILE : Rail_Wheel

PROCEDURE :

  1. The geometry is imported and then opened directly in the mechanical module.

  2. Two contacts are provided between them:

Frictional : Wheel to running rail

Frictionless : Shaft to the wheel

  3. The first joint is applied is the fixed joint for the non-moment of the track while running the wheel on them. Both sides of the rail are given fixed Body-Ground connection with Behavior as Rigid.

  4. Then a Translational joint was given to the shaft which attached to the wheel so that the forces acting on the shaft will be trnslational to the wheel. Afterwards Planar joint was added to the wheel.

  5. Then Meshing Criteria was given:

    Mesh :
    Element Size = 50mm

For better refinement at the contact surfaces, three faces were selected manually using Face Sizing with an elment size of 35mm.

  6. In the Analysis Settings two loads are applied.

Bearing load with the value of 100KN :

    Joint Displacement :

  7. Then the following parameters for selected for evaluation of the result.
    • Equivalent Von misses Stress
    • Total Deformation
    • Life cycle
    • User-defined Result

RESULT :

Case 1 : Multiply the bearing load by 5 times and compare the result with load of 100KN. Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and Life cycle under both the loads.

Bearing Load of 100KN

Total Deformation :

Equivalent Stress :

Life Cycle :

Bearing load of 500KN

Total Deformation :

Equivalent Stress :

Life Cycle :

COMPARISON OF THE RESULTS :

Bearing Load 100KN 500KN
Total Deformation Min(mm) 0 2.8422e-14
Total Deformation Max(mm) 1004.5 1002.5
Equivalent Stress von misses Min (Mpa) 5.176e-10 2.0658e-9
Equivalent Stress von misses Max (Mpa) 75.611 321.27

The life cycle for both the materials is 1e6.

Case 2 : Implement a User-defined result and calculare the Total Deformation from this result and check if its the same as that obtained by the Ansys for a load of 100KN.

Load of 100KN

Load of 500KN

The expression used to evaluate the result is `sqrt(U_x^2+U_y^2+U_z^2)` and the out is in mm with type length. And it can be seen that the User-Defined value is same as the one Ansys calculated.
