Week 2 - Flow over a Cylinder.
Phenomenon of Karman Vortex street.
In fluid dynamics, a Karman vortex street is a repeating pattern of swirling vortices, caused by a process known as vortex shedding, which is responsible for the unsteady separation of flow of a fluid around blunt bodies.
It is named after the engineer and fluid dynamicist Theodore von Kármán,and is responsible for such phenomena as the "singing" of suspended telephone or power lines and the vibration of a car antenna at certain speeds. Mathematical modeling of von Kármán vortex street can be performed using different techniques including but not limited to solving the full Navier-Stokes equations with k-epsilon, SST, k-omega and Reynolds stress, and large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence models,by numerically solving some dynamic equations such as the Ginzburg-Landau equation, or by use of a bicomplex variable.
A vortex street will form only at a certain range of flow velocities, specified by a range of Reynolds numbers (Re), typically above a limiting Re value of about 90. The (global) Reynolds number for a flow is a measure of the ratio of inertial to viscous forces in the flow of a fluid around a body or in a channel, and may be defined as a nondimensional parameter of the global speed of the whole fluid flow:
`Re_L=(UL)/v_0`
where:
- `U` = the free stream flow speed (i.e. the flow speed far from the fluid boundaries `U_oo` like the body speed relative to the fluid at rest, or an inviscid flow speed, computed through the Bernoulli equation), which is the original global flow parameter, i.e. the target to be non-dimensionalised.
- `L` = a characteristic length parameter of the body or channel
- `v_0` = the free stream kinematic viscosity parameter of the fluid, which in turn is the ratio:
between:
- `rho_0` = the reference fluid density.
- `mu_0`= the free stream fluid dynamic viscosity
This formula will generally hold true for the range 250 < Red < 200000:

- f = vortex shedding frequency.
- d = diameter of the cylinder
- U = flow velocity.
Now, simulating the flow over a 2-D cylinder with a velocity of 1m/s form the inlet.
Properties of simulating the flow over the 2-D cylinder :
- Flow over a cylinder is important in many industrial application like cooling of iron or cylindrical pipe.
- Circular pipes have more application in heat exchanger. High temperature flue gases flow over a circular cylinder in a cross flow.
- Depending on flow rate, fluid properties and size of cylinder, the flow can be laminar, transition and turbulent.
- Larger vortexes are found at lower Reynolds number.
Now the geometry of the 2D cylinder :
Here, the length and width of the rectangle 60m and 20m and diameter of the cylinder in 2-D is 2m and remaining details of the geometry is mentioned below.
Details of the geometry:

Geometry of the 2-D strucutre with the above mention detials is shown below:

Now to get the accurate number of result for the cylinder we have to use sizing option in the meshing where we can increase the number of divisions inside the cylinder for the accurate result.

To get the above number of divisions change the parameters to the requirement of the geometry.

After doing the sizing of the cylinder we have to put the layers around the cylinder for better meshing quality.

After changing the inflation option and inserting the layer height and maximum layers as per requirement which have been shown above. The geometry is shown below:

After changing the parameters before the meshing now the meshing properties has to change from the default element size to 0.5m.

When meshing is done we have to simulate geometry with laminar flow and with velocity inlet 1 m/s. We have to simulate the flow at different reynolds number 10 , 100, 1000, 10000, 100000 at the monitor poin which we have to locate at a distance of four times to the dimaeter to right from the axis. After doing all this we have intiliaze it and simulate it and need to find the coefficient of drag and lift for different reynolds number.
Part 1)
Simulate the flow with the steady and unsteady case and calculate the Strouhal Number for Re= 100.
By putting the dynamic viscosity value from the Reynolds Formulae `Re=(rhouL)/mu`
Re=100
`rho`=1
u=1
L=2
From this we can find the dynmaic viscosity of the flow and put the value of dynamic viscosity in the chart.

Steady state:
At steady state with reynolds number=100 we can see the vortex shedding from the given figure of velocity contour and variation of the velocity from the cylinder.

Now, pressure contour of the geometry of steady state flow.

Residuals of the geometry :

Coefficient of lift of the steady state flow from the geometry:

Coefficient of drag for steady state flow of geometry.

Vertex average of the velocity for the geometry.

Vertex average of the velocity from the monitor point of the geometry.

Unsteady State:
Changing the flow of the geometry from the steady state to the unsteady state from the physics in ansys fluent.

At unsteady state with reynolds number=100 we cannot see the vortex shedding from velocity contour of the given figure and variation of the velocity from the cylinder.

Pressure Contour of the geometry with unsteady flow:

Residuals of the geometry from the unsteady flow:

Coefficient of lift of the geometry from unsteady flow:

Coefficient of lift of the geometry from the unsteady flow:

Vertex average of velocity of geomtry from unsteady flow:

Vertex average of velocity at monitor point of the geometry from the unsteady flow:

As comparing the both the steady flow and unsteady flow we can see the differences between them :
| Steady State | Unsteady State |
| In steady state there is coretex shedding happening through the flow with Re=100 | There is no Vortex shedding happening in the unsteady state with Re=100 |
| Through the residuals we can see that the velocity decrease and then goes to intial position and then become constant. | Wheres in unsteady state the velocity is unstable and decreses rapidly in seesaw manner and then it gradually decreases. |
| At first the the vertex average of the velocity decreses and then gradually increases after some time period the curling happens where the profile is like sine curve. | The vertex average of the velcity decreases rapidly and then slight increase and then it remans constant. |
| The coefficient of drag and lift in lift the frequency is constantly varying but in the drag the frequency has sudden decline which is constant through out the iterations. | Both the coefficient of drag and lift is constant through out the iterations. |

b) The effect of Reynolds number on the coefficient of drag.
As the reynolds number increases the coefficient of decreases or vice-versa.
The lower the Reynolds Number, the lesser the “Inertial Forces” struggling to keep fluid flowing, because the “Weak Flow Energy” loses the fight against “Viscous Forces (Sticky Forces)” which try to the prevent the fluid from flowing.
In other words,
- the smaller the Reynolds Number is, the more the fight between “motion and stickiness” tips over towards the dominance of more stickiness, due to higher Viscous Forces and comperatively smaller Inertial Forces (less kinetic energy of the flow).
- the higher the Reynolds Number is, this fight tips over towards the dominance of higher Inertial forces, due to increased kinetic energy of the flow.
Therefore, an easier description would be like, “The Lower the Reynolds Number, the more the sticky Viscous Forces gain dominance over the motivating energy of Inertial Forces.”
And as anything gets more sticky (Viscous Forces), stickiness causes a higher drag. By the same token, as the kinetic energy of motivating forces (Inertial Forces) increase, the ReN will increase and hence the “Drag due to Viscous Forces” exerted within the fluid flow decreases, because the energetic motivating Inertial Forces increase and finally take over the relative dominance while the Viscous Forces gradually diminish.[1]
