Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve
AIM
For the given model, check for the geometrical errors and perform Topology cleanup accordingly. Set three different target lengths as three different cases and mesh the model.
- Target length = 1mm, 3 mm and 5 mm (i.e. 3 cases)
- Element type = Tria
Apply any one target length from the above at a time for the entire model as One case. Submit 3 different models for 3 cases.
Write a detailed report on your meshing process and also mention which case is giving good results along with the reason.
CAD Geometry

PROCEDURE
- The CAD file for the pressure valve is imported into the ANSA workbench.
- The CAD is subjected to geoemetry checks. This will give the errors occured to the CAD file at that moment, probably due to import and geometrical errors.
- The geometry had many hollow spaces (as shown in above fig). These hollow spaces were filled using CONS > Fill Hole, under the TOPO deck.
- The whole geometry should be a water geometry hence the the surfaces which are named to be "inlet" and "outlet", is also filled using Fill Hole command.
- The surfaces which were gave abrupt sufraces were corrected using Surfaces > Coons under the TOPO deck.
- Then each components were named under PID as coloumn, valve head, inlet, outlet, spring, body.
- Three cases of meshing were carried out - 1mm, 3mm and 5mm.
- The meshing is started by selecting the MESH deck.
- The Mesh Parameters and Quality Criteria were selected an the target length, min and max target length were specified with tria as the mesh type.
- For 1mm, target legth = 1mm, min target length = 0.5, max target length = 2
- Then Perimetrs > Length from the MESH deck is selected.
- The perimeter and macros length were given 1cm each.
- Atlast the Mesh Generation > Spot me from the MESH deck is selected.
- The mesh with 1cm will be obtained. Then the steps 10, 11, 12 is repeated for the below mentioned mesh lengths.
- For 3mm, target legth = 3m, min target length = 1m, max target length = 4mm
- For 5mm, target legth = 5mm, min target length = 3mm, max target length = 7mm
Results
for 1mm`to`

for 3mm `to`

for 5mm `to`

Here the best mesh for obtaining better results will f 1mm mesh cell size. This is because when the mesh cell size increases, there is distortion in the shape of the geometry. For example the the spring's shape has not been captured when the mesh cell size is 5mm,

But the 1mm mesh cell size is much better and captures the spring in the best way,
