Challenge

Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Objective:

To perform surface meshing on a pressure valve for three different cases with target lengths = 1mm, 3mm, and 5mm and to find the case which yields a good result

Procedure:

The given model is imported

Checked for geometry errors with single cons enabled

Used the fill-hole option to close the outlet surface

Patched all the geometry errors using the new face option

Closed the bottom hole using the new face option

Checking to see if all geometry errors are fixed

All errors were fixed, triple cons are necessary for this model and hence not considered as errors

Using the cut option topology cleanup is performed to remove any small surfaces which can cause errors later in meshing

PID for all surfaces is created separately

Meshing is performed for all three cases

Learning Outcomes:

  • Geometry check is applied for finding errors in the model
  • Implemented the new face tool and fill hole tool for geometry cleanup
  • Learned about creating new PID surfaces
  • Learned to mesh each part at a different target length

Result:

Case 1

Target length = 5mm, Element type = Tria

Case 2

Target length = 3mm, Element type = Tria

Case 3

Target length = 1mm, Element type = Tria

Conclusion:

Case Number of elements
1 9448
2 24821
3 212679

The mesh with the target length of 1mm gave good results than other cases because in other cases small parts like the spring and the valve head are not generated with good quality whereas, in 1mm mesh, the quality of all parts is good.
