Challenge

Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Aim:

To Mesh the given pressure valve using Tria element of target element size of 1mm, 3mm, and 5mm as three different cases using ANSA.

Procedure:

Step 1: Geometry Analysis

  • Import the Geometry file into the ANSA
  • Go to Check-->Geometry-->Execute and look for the errors in the geometry
  • Look for the single cones(red cones) in the model

  • If the red cones are in face the use TOPO-->Faces-->New-->Existing Surface to patch the gap
  • If the red cones lies elsewhere in the geometry then use TOPO-->Faces-->New-->COONS to patch the gap

Step 2: Geometry Cleanup

  • After Getting rid of all red cones in the geometry it's time to clean up the geometry as per our target element size requirement
  • use TOPO-->Faces-->Cut-->Right mouse button to remove the double cones as per our requirement

Step 3: PID Allotment

  • After Geometry Clean up PID must be alloted with meaningful name in order to make the process of selection easier.
  • use Properties-->New-->Shell_Property to create new PID and assign them with respective parts

Step 4: Meshing

  • MESH-->Perimeters-->Length-->perimeters and Macrons. In Perimeters and Macrons, Length is assigned a value of 1mm after selecting the entire CAD model
  • Mesh Parameters-->Target Length = 1, Minimum Target Length = 0.5
  • Mesh Quality-->Min Length = 0.5, Max Length = 1.2
  • MESH-->Mesh Generation-->Spot Mesh after clicking it Select the entire CAD model and press the middle mouse button.

NOTE:

  • Steps 1 - 4 is same for any Target length except Target Length, Min Length, Max Length, Minimum Target Length are varied accordingly

  • It must be ensured that "Tria" option must be selected in Mesh Parameters to have Tria mesh.

Learning Outcomes:

Learned to create a 2-D tria mesh on a surface accompanied by Geometry Clean up.

Conclusion:

It has been found that finer the mesh less the error in result obtained. But the computation power required is more to solve them the reason behind this is that No. of nodes increases and they lie closer to each other. Not only that Coarse mesh results in arise of irregular surface as shown in the images below.

Result:

Tria mesh of element sizes 1mm, 3mm and 5mm has been created.
