Week 2 Challenge

AIM

  • To analyze the structural elements and validate the results
  • To study elements in Staad pro

INTRODUCTION

STAAD.Pro is one of the popular software that is used for analyzing & designing structures like – buildings, towers, bridges, industrial, transportation and utility structures

Here we create supply supported and fixed support beam with loading and analyze the beam using STAAD PRO

PROCEDURE

1.1. How will you assign the Circular section to column?

Create the model in the STAAD Pro

Go to properties-Select the Define parameters

Assign the circular shape of the column

1.2. How will you assign Unit system to a .std model file?

Go to file menu-click on Settings

Select display options

Select Structure units

In the unit option we can change all the units accordingly

1.3. What are the parameters to be specified while using “Bay Frame” option?

  • Length
  • width
  • Height
  • No. of bays along length
  • No. of bays along height
  • No. of bays along width

1.4. Name a few codal standards incorporated in STAAD Pro software.

  • IS 800-2007
  • IS 456:2000
  • BS 5400
  • AISC 360-16
  • AISI S100 2016
  • ASCE 10 97
  • ASME NF 3000 1974

1.5. How will you specify the design compressive strength for a RCC section?

Select Design Option

Select Define parameters

2.1 State the “Input” steps involved in RCC design.

GEOMETRY

The first step in designing is geometry. The node location and the node spacing are defined

PROPERTIES

Specify the sectional properties and the size of section

MATERIALS

Materials are defined in this step

SPECIFICATION

Any specification required are given

SUPPORT

Support conditions are defined

LOADING

All loads and load combination are defined

ANALYSIS

Analyse the prepared model

DESIGN

After performing the analysis design of the members is carried out

2.2. Explain the difference between Fixed and Enforced support condition in STAADPro.

The difference between Fixed and Enforced support condition is that fixed support defines the restraint for all the degree of freedom that is three translational degree of freedom and three rotational degree of freedom while enforced support defines the same but along with it also defines translational stiff springs for translational restraints, and rotational stiff springs for rotational restraints

3.1. Explain the steps involved in analysis of a model using STAAD Pro sequentially.

After the modeling is completed loads and load combinations are provided the start analyzing

Select the Run Analysis in the Analysis and Design ribbon tab.

3.2. Explain the two ways in which a structural framework/model can be created in STAAD Pro software.

Node by Node method

In this method first nodes are created and then creating different elements

Structure wizard method-

In this method geometry values shall be given and automatically it will generate a mode

3.3. Elaborate the different support conditions in STAAD Pro.

FIXED: All the translational and rotational displacement are restrained

PINNED: Translational displacement are restrained but rotational moments are not restrained

FIXED BUT: The fixed support is similar to pinned support it allows us to provide the degree of freedom to view the displacement either translation or rotational

ENFORCED: When enforced supports are assigned to the structure the software allows the springs to itself and the displacement can be calculated however there is no provision to provide the spring constant

ENFORCED BUT: The software assigns the spring itself with zero stiffness or high stiffness

3.4. How will you extract the stress distribution for a staircase slab?

Complete the Analysis

Go to the post processing mode and click on the view results option

Go to the plate results option, click on the dropdown list and from the same list choose stress distribution result, then the staad pro will depict the result for the same.

3.5. Explain the different ways to view SFD & BMD in STAAD Pro.

After Completing the Analysis

Go to post processing mode then click over the beam results

Then and from the view results panel choose FY for shear force diagram and Mz for Bending moment diagram

Practical

  1. Analyze the following structural elements and validate the results
  2. Simply Supported Beam
  3. A Simply supported beam with two point loads symmetrically placed
  4. Span L = 20m
  5. Load P = 50kN each
  6. Both P located at 5m from each support

Step 1:Open the software

Step 2:Select the grid option and Draw the nodes

Step 3:Draw the beam of length 20

Step 4:Add material to the section

Step 5:Add two support condition and assign it

Step 6:Add the load

Step 7:Perform analysis

B.Fixed Beam

  1. Span L = 16m
  2. Uniformly Distributed Load w=9kN

Step 1:Open the software

Step 2:Select the grid option

Step 3:Draw the beam of length 16

Step 4:Add material to the section

Step 5:Add two support condition and assign it

Step 6:Add the load

Step 7:Perform analysis
