CHALLENGE 14

BUTTERFLY VALVE

AIM:

  • The main objective of this challenge is to design the butterfly valve components and assemble it.
  • Create a drawing sheets of butterfly valve using the drafting tools and
  • Understand the GD&T concepts and apply for the butterfly valve component.

INTRODUCTION:

Butterfly valves are a family of quarter-turn rotational motion valves that are used in pipelines to shut-off flow. It is often said that butterfly valves can be used to regulate the flow. However, we do not recommend doing this, as it can damage the valve disk and have a negative effect on the sealing properties. They are used in a wide variety of process media and industries especially in water supply, collection, and distribution, as well as pumping stations, and have a broad range of use cases especially in flow isolation. A couple of their key advantages over other valve families are their simple construction and compactness, resulting in the end products being of lighter weights and lower cost and with smaller installation footprints and faster actuation speeds.

SOFTWARE:

  • SIMENS NX CAD

COMPONENTS OF BUTTERFLY VALVE:

  • Body
  • Shaft/stem
  • Retainer
  • Disc plate
  • Lever handle
  • Nut

BODY OF BUTTERFLY VALVE:

  • Make a design of butterfly valve body part from the given 2D drawing.
  • Made from a tough and rigid material, the valve body houses and protects the disc and other internal components of the butterfly valve. It links the valve to the piping system and to the external operating mechanism that controls the disc.

SHAFT/STEM:

  • The stem is a shaft that connects the disc to the external operating mechanism. It is sealed by O-rings and bushings to prevent fluid leakage. The stem can be made from a one-piece shaft or two-piece (split-stem) shaft. The placement of the stem axis and its connection to the disc depends on the type of butterfly valve.

RETAINER:

  • The retainer is a specially shaped washer that fits over the top of the valve spring. The keepers, or locks, fit into the valve stem grooves, holding the retainer and spring in place.
  • Depending of the type of Industrial Valve used mostly on a quarter turn rotary valve, eccentric or ball or Butterfly type the retainer screws into the valve body to hold the seat in place with pressure and make a simple one piece body Valve assembly.
  • It may also be held with some special screws as in Butterfly Valves. Normally the retainer is also mostly called the seat retainer in the catalogs.

  • Apply GD&T symbols and dimensions to the retainer.

DISC PLATE:

  • The disc permits, regulates, and stops the flow of the fluid in the pipeline. Flow is controlled by the rotary motion of the disc. The discharge flow rate depends on the degree of disc opening.
  • When the disc is perpendicular to the flow’s cross-sectional area, the fluid is fully obstructed from flowing out of the valve. Otherwise, the fluid is permitted to flow through the space between the seat and the disc. It takes a 90° rotation from the closed position of the disc to allow full opening or closing of the valve. Flow is throttled when the disc is rotated less than 90°.

  • Apply GD&T for the disc plate.

LEVER HANDLE:

  • A butterfly valve is a valve that controls the flow rate or pressure of fluids.
  • This Valve is also known as a quarter-turn valve. From here, the handle only rotated 90 degrees (quarter turn) to allow or halt media flow.
  • The Valve is open where the handle is parallel to the Pipe; it is off when the handle is perpendicular.

  • Apply GD&T for the lever handle.

NUT:

  • The nut is used to keep lever is tightened and it is in contact with the lever surface as well as the body of the surface.

  • Apply GD&T symbols for it.

ASSEMBLY OF BUTTERFLY VALVE:

  • Assemble all the components of a butterfly valve using the ASSEMBLE CONSTRAINS tool bar.
  • Make sure that the body is the fixing component join all the parts in the body.

  • Develop a drawing sheet for it and apply the GD&T symbols using the drafting tools.

CONCLUSION:

  • The design and assembly of butterfly valve is and the creation of drawing sheet is completed and GD&T symbols is applied for it.
