Week 12 Challenge
AIM : BARGE IMPACT LOAD ON BRIDGE
INTRODUCTION :
- The Dead weight tonnage of Panamax vessel is 52500 DWT. The Ship can accommodate maximum of 4500 containers. Each container is of standard 6.1 TEU. It is the heaviest manmade ship maximum load taking ship in the world which carries goods to and fro between eastern & western countries. Speed of the Barge is 60Km/hr.
- Span of the Bridge is 12m Width of the bridge is 7m.Supported by Piers of size 2.5 m x 2.5m. The Rise of the bridge is 5m. Assume suitable sections for the Truss members. The Deck slab is 500mm thick. The cross Girders are 0.75 m x 1.8 m dimensions. Suitable data can be assumed for other elements. Hydrodynamic coefficient as 1.25.
CALCULATION :
- BARGE COLLISION ENERGY
KE = 500 X CH X W X V^2
= 500 X 1.25 X 52500 X 16.67^2
= 9118229531
- BARGE DAMAGE DEPTH
aB = 300 (1+ 1.3 X 10^-7 X 9118229531 ) = 103675 mm
aB > 100
- BARGE IMPACT COLLISION FORCE
PB = 6 X 10^6 + 1600 X 103675 = 171880 KN
- UDL LOAD = 171880 / 12 = 14323.33 KN/M
STEPS :
- MODEL MAKING

- LOAD APPLICATION
