Week-11 Challenge: Braking
Question 1:- For a defined driving cycle, calculate the energy required for braking.
Answer:- to calculate energy require for braking
we have taken WLTC class 3, version5 vehicle, mass= 100kg
braking energy=0.5*mass*velocity^2

total energy required for braking= 1376.5 KJ
Question 2:- Why electric motor can’t develop braking torque at high speed similar to starting? How electric and mechanical brakes are coordinated?
Answer:- electric motor can't develop braking torque at high speed similar to starting because at starting time motor takes high current nearly 5 - 6 times of its full load & as torque is proportional to sq. of current, torque increases til it reaches its rated speed as per its characteristics at high speed torque becomes less and therefore while braking torque is low, time is taken for stop the motor.
electric & mechanical brakes are coordinated in two ways-
1)series braking- in this method regenerative braking & mechanical braking are applied one after another. both are not applied at the same time.
2)parallel braking- in this both electrical & mechanical brakes are applied at the same time to suddenly stop the vehicle.
Question 3:- Make a MATLAB program which plots contour of given motor speed, torque and efficiency values. Attach the code as a .m file attach a screenshot of all the plots.
