Week 11 Car Crash simulation
#11 Week Assignment- Introduction to Ansys Workbench
Aim:To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body.
Objective: By varying the thickness for 3 different values the simulation has to be run and analyze the difference in the output parameters.
Case Setup:
- Import the geometry into the mechanical module in the Ansys Workbench under Explicit Dynamics Structural Analysis.
- Rename the geometries based on their structure.
- Assign material for the car body as stainless steel.
I
- Insert the symmetry in the geometry and select the face and and edges of the geometry.

Meshing:
- Create the method under mesh and select the car body and select the type as triangles.

- Insert sizing and select the faces as below and insert a sizing of 175mm.

- Insert the method select the wall and type as tetrahedrons.

- Click on generate and the mesh will be generated as below.

- Insert a fixed support under explicit dynamics and select the faces as below, to fix them for the simulation.

- Insert a displacement to the face of wall for 500mm in the Z-Direction.

- Goto Analysis Settings and set the end time to 0.01.
- List the output parameters to solve.
- Click on solve.

CASE-1: (Thickness of 0.7 mm)
Total Deformation:

Equivalent Stress:

CASE-2: (Thickness of 1.1mm)
Total Deformation:

Equivalent Stress:

CASE-3: (Thickness of 1.5mm)
Total Deformation:

Equivalent Stress:

Results: The results of all the 3 cases of car body simulation with varying thicknesses are tabulated below,
| CASE-1(0.7mm) | CASE-2(1.1mm) | CASE-3(1.5mm) | |
| Total Deformation (mm) | 1050.7 | 1038.9 | 1032.1 |
| Directional Deformation(Y) (mm) | 87.92 | 83.43 | 86.69 |
| Equivalent Stress (MPa) | 11599 | 11565 | 11520 |
| Equivalent Strain (mm/mm) | 0.059 | 0.059 | 0.058 |
Conclusion: From the car crash simulation using three different thicknesses we obtained varying results for each. There is only a minor change in the values observed. As the thickness improves the stress, strain and deformation values get decreased.
