Car Crash Analysis
AIM:
- To perform explicit analysis of Car crash simulation and evaluate the stress and deformation results.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:
- To assign Stainless steel NL for the body and structural steel for the wall.
- To define Mesh method and Edge sizing.
- To define Velocity and fixed support.
- To evaluate the stress, deformation and strain in the work piece.
PROCEDURE:
- CASE 1:
- OPEN WORKBENCH21 > NEW PROJECT > EXPLICIT DYNAMICS.
- This will start a new explicit dynamics project.
- Rename the project as Car crash simulation.
- Go to ENGINEERING DATA > EXPLICIT MATERIALS > STAINLESS STEEL NL > ADD.

- Go to GEOMETRY > IMPORT > MODEL.

- Then double click on Geometry. This will open the Spaceclaim.
- In Space claim check the model for any dents or irregularities.
- The geometry looks good, exit the Spaceclaim.
- Then double click on Model. This will open Mechanical module.
- Now, rename the geometry as wall and body.
- Then assign stainless steel NL to the car body and structural steel to the wall.

- Go to GEOMETRY > CAR BODY > THICKNESS = 0.3MM > PARAMETER STUDY.

- Go to Contacts and DELETE ALL CONTACTS.
- Go to MODEL > INSERT > SYMMETRY REGION > GEOMETRY = WALL FACE.

- Similarly, define SYMMETRY REGION > GEOMETRY REGION > CAR BODY EDGES.

- MESH > INSERT > METHOD > GEOMETRY = WALL BODY > METHOD = TETRAHEDRON.

- MESH > INSERT > FACE SIZING > GEOMETRY = CAR BODY FACES WHICH DO NOT COME IN CONTACT > ELEMENT SIZE = 175MM.

- Now, MESH > GENERATE MESH.

- The mesh will be generated on the model.
- Then go to STATIC STRUCTURAL > ANALYIS SETTINGS > NO OF STEPS = 1 > END TIME = 1E-3 > MAXIMUM ENERGY ERROR = 0.1.

- Go to EXPLICIT DYNAMICS > INSERT > DISPLACEMENT > GEOMETRY = WALL FACE > Z COMPONENT = 500MM.

- Go to EXPLICIT DYNAMICS > INSERT > FIXED SUPPORT > GEOMETRY = CAR BODY FACES WHICH DO NOT COME IN CONTACT.

- Then, go to SOLUTION > INSERT > STRESS > STRAIN > DEFORMATION.

- This will set the output results.
- Then SOLUTION > SOLVE.
- Then after solution is obtained go to PARAMETER STUDY > INSERT > INPUT PARAMETERS AS CAR BODY THICKNESS > OUTPUT RESULTS AS DEFORMATION AND STRESS RESULTS > RETAIN POINTS > UPDATE ALL DESIGN POINTS.

- The software will solve for the design points and evaluate the results for the different thickness.
RESULTS:
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- To setup explicit dynamics analysis for car crash simulation.
- To assign material from the material library.
- To define mesh method and face sizing.
- To define displacement and fixed support.
- To define output results.
- To perform parameter study.
CONCLUSION:
- By performing this project we conclude that the analysis of car crash simulation is performed and the stress and deformation results are obtained.
