Challenge

Explicit Dynamic analysis for Car Crash simulation(ANSYS)

Aim :

To perform frontal car crash simulation and perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. Analyse the Total Deformation and Equivalent Stress acting on the model.

FILE : CAR_CRASH

Material Used :

Car Body :

Wall :

Procedure :

  1. Import the geometry model into the Explicit Dynamics settings and the parts were renamed accordingly.

  2. Since the model used is half of the entire model, summetry conditions has to be applied so as to get accurate results. The conditions were applied on the wall as well as the car body.

  3. For meshing the wall body was meshed with tetrahedron elements using the Patch conforming method nad car body was meshing using trangles method.

  4. The analysis was performed with the end time step as 0.01s. The car body was maintained stationary by fixing the faces of the model and the wall was moved towards the car by giving a displacement of 500mm.

Result :

Equivalent Stress
Total Deformation

Parametric study of varying Thickness :

Conclusion :

When the thickness value increases, the deformation should decrease and the stress should be increased which exactly what we obtained from the above Parametric Study.
