CAR CRASH - SIMULATION USING

ANSYS Workbench 2020 R2

OBJECTIVES

For this challenge, you will have to perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. You need to apply the same conditions as mentioned in the video that corresponds to this challenge. Annalise the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

  • INTRODUCTION

In this challenge, we are simulating the Frontal Car Crash test to find out the structural abilities of the Car Body by hitting with a movable wall.

  • DESIGN SPECIFICATION

Assign Structural Steel & Stainless Steel NL as the materials for Wall & Car Body respectively from engineering data.

  • STATIC ANALYSIS

Open Mechanical modeler for analysis.

Consider all units are in metric.

Rename geometry as Specimen respectively.

Suppress unwanted geometries.

Input thickness for the car body.

3.1 SYMMETRIC REGION

  1. Apply Symmetric region for wall

2 .Apply Symmetric region for Car Body

3.2 MESH CREATION

  1. Insert Method and select Tetrahedrons for Wall

  1. Insert Face Sizing for the back faces of the Car Body

  1. Insert method for Car Body as Triangles

  1. Generate Mesh

3.3 ANALYSIS SETTINGS

Consider the following as the analysis settings for the tension test and torsion test.

3.4 BOUNDARY CONDITION

  1. Insert Fixed joint for Car Body

  1. Insert Displacement joint for Wall

3.5 PARAMETER

Do the Paramater study with different thickness of Car Body

3.6 SOLUTIONS

Car Body Thickness - 3mm

Car Body Thickness - 4mm

Car Body Thickness - 5mm

Comparison

Total deformation

Slight increment in thickness not showing significant change in the total deformation.

Equivalent stress

Slight increment in thickness not showing significant change in the total deformation.

  • CONCLUSSION

Simulation of Car Crash simulation conducted with Ansys Workbench. From the analysis it is learned more about parameter study and symmetrizing the geometry to simplifying the analysis time.
