Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Objective: To simulate a car crash with different thickness of the car body and to find the total deformation and equivalent stress in each case.

Materials:

a. Structural Steel:(used for the wall)

b. Stainless Steel NL: (used for the car body)

Geometry:

Symmetry:

In order for the simulation to run the geometry must be complete. Hence a symmtery is done to both the car body and wall.

Connection:

There is no contact set as it is a explicit dynamic simulation and the body interaction is kept to frictionless.

Mesh:

   Number of nodes  Elements
Mesh 25911 27987

Analysis Setting:

Fixed Support:

Displacment:

Results:

Total Deformation:

a. 0.3

b. 0.4

c. 0.5

Directional Deformation:

a. 0.3

b. 0.4

c. 0.5

Equivalent Stress:

a. 0.3

b. 0.4

c. 0.5

Thickness Total Deformation(mm) Directional Deformation(mm) Equivalent Stress(MPa)
0.3 1036.6 54.557 18693
0.4 1033.9 54.465 18703
0.5 1031.8 54.593 18703

From the above results we can conclude  as the thicnkess of the car body increased total deformation has decreased. the Equivalent stress and directional deformation remained constant.
