Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Aim - To perform parametric study of car crash using three values of thickness of car body.

Procedure-

1. We need to carry frontal crash test of the car using explicit dynamics Analysis System.

2. We import the model which include both car body and wall. Stainless material for the car body is used and material is not needed for wall body because we will be giving rigidy body defination to it.

3. Symmetry region is provided to mid side surface of the car and symmetry region is provided in order to model out full body.

4. Body interaction are set to be frictionless.

Meshing-

1. Body is meshed with tria element with a sizing of 100mm to the face of the car.

2. The wall is meshed with hex elements.

Analysis settings

End time - .001

Maximum energy error -2

Initial, Minimum and maximum Time step - Program controlled

Boundary conditions

1. To reduce the computational time, fixed support is provided to the back faces of the car

2. Displacement is given to the wall 500 mm along the z direction.

Results

The observed results can be summed up in the below table: -

CASES Car Body Thickness (mm) Maximum Equivalent Stress (MPa) Total deformation(mm)
I 0.2 6257.4676068465569 1012.2720845291794
II 0.3 6306.5236316179044 1009.9681450748345
III 0.4 6325.8691363272783 1008.3805463587005
