Week 11 Car Crash simulation
OBJECTIVE:
To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body applying the same conditions as mentioned in the video that corresponds to this challenge.
Deliverables: Total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.
Step 1: Engineering Data
- For the Challenge add stainless steel NL material.
Step 2: Geometry
- Right click on geometry and Import the Skill_Lync_carbody_wall.STEP extension file
- Rename the Static Structural tab as Car Crash simulation.
- Update the Static Structural tab and proceed to model.
Step 3: Model
- Open Model and under geometry assign names according to convenience for better understanding.
- Assign the names Car Body and Wall to corresponding geometries.
- Suppress any other geometries not in use if needed.
- Assign Stainless steel material and a thickness of 0.3mm to Car Body. Enable parametric study in box at the start of thickness option tab.
Step 4: Connections
- Contacts:- Delete the default contacts created by software.
- As in explicit analysis we need body interactions, keep the interaction as frictionless.
Step 5: Meshing
- Check for the default mesh and see if any further refinement is necessary.

Step 6: Analysis Settings:
- Insert a Fixed Support to faces of car body which would not conatct the wall.
- Now insert a displacement and apply it to the back face of the wall with a value of 500 mm.
- In analysis setting enter end time as 0.001
- Keep the rest of the settings as default.
- Insert Symmetry under model tab and insert symmetry region while selecting wall side face to extend the wall.
- Insert another symmetry region and select half cut edges of the the car body to make it behave as full body.
- If needed consider increasing the mesh size and use Tetrahedron elements for meshing instead of Quad elements.
- Also, consider making coarse mesh for car body at the back which is not in focus. This can be done using sizing method. Also set smoothing as low in Mesh quality.

Step 7: Solution
Insert results for Equivalent Stress distribution, Total Deformation for each geometry in focus to observe the values and data.
Results and Simulations for 3 Different materials:

| CASE# | Units | Case1, T=0.3 | Case2, T=0.4 | Case3, T=0.5 |
| Total Deformation | mm | 1042.5 | 1041.2 | 1041 |
| Equivalent Stress | Mpa | 9676.8 | 9661.8 | 9649.6 |
