Week 10 - Challenge 3 - Door Trim Lower with Engineering Features

A report on Door Trim Lower with Engineering Features (Heat Stakes & Locators)

Obective: To create class B and class C surface for the door trim lower skin part and creat heat stakes and locators on the b surface.

Draft Analysis:

  • The draft analysis determines whether the part is manufacturable or not. The forming processes which uses the core and cavity to manufacture the parts always required some draft. Draft allows the formed part inside mold to get eject from the core and cavity.
  • It helps the part to leave the mold surface in the erlier stage of ejection or mold opening. Hence reduce the friction between the part and mold which results long life of core and cavity and production of finished parts.

Draft analysis of Class A Surface and Tooling Direction in CATIA:

1) Process to create tooling axis in CATIA (Bisecting Method):

  • A 3d line is drawn on both edges of the surface using point-point method as shown in below pictures.
  • A point is given on the edge of the surface using on curve method as shown in below image.
  • A line is created using bisecting method in the middle of the two lines that are created earlier. This line is going to be a tooling axis for the part.

2) Process To Do Draft Analysis On Class A Surface:

  • Draft Anlysis Option : insert -- analysis -- feature draft analysis
  • In draft analysis window select the compass option and place the compass on the tooling axis by draging it then click on the lock option.
  • Now click anywhere on the surface and switch the draft direction using direction option which will alter the draft direction. This will result in change of colour of the part. Green means positive draft and the blue is negative draft.
  • Positive draft indicates the part is manufacturable.
  • The same method is applicable for draft analysis of the part, just make sure that the view mode of the part is in material mode.
  • Colour code for type of draft: 1) green : positive draft

2) red : zero deg draft

3) blue : negative draft

3) Draft Analysis of the Door Trim Lower Part Body:

  • Draft analysis of door trim lower part for 3deg draft:
  • Draft analysis of heat stake and locator for 0.5deg draft:

4) Final part body:
