Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
OBJECTIVE:- Is to simulate bullet penetrating into a bucket using 3 different Non-Linear material for the bucket and analyze their behavior for the same velocity of the bullet.
CASE_1: Aluminium Alloy NL
CASE_2: Magnesium Alloy NL
CASE_3: Titanium Alloy NL
Procedure
- Open the ANSYS workbench in the system.
- After opening the workbench, select Explict Dynamics.
- After that open the engineering data and add the material as Tantalum from the explict materials for the bullet and Aluminium Alloy NL,Magnesium Alloy NL,Titanium Alloy NL for the bucket from non linear materials from the engineering data sources.

Material properties of Titanium Alloy NL

- After creating/selectng required material close the engineering data and Import the given geomentry, To check the given geomentry open in space claim.
- Split single bucket surfaces into two surfaces at which bullet hits the bucket using split command in space claim.

- After that open mechanical module,In the geomentry it consists of two components rename them as Bucket(Flexible) and Bullet(Rigid) and assign Aluminium Alloy NL for bucket and Tantalum for bullet

- Inside the connections there are default contacts created.Delete them and proceed for the further steps in analysis.
MESH
- Generated 6mm mesh at which bullet hits the bucket using edge sizing option. This will lead to reduce computational time drastically and improve the accuracy of result with low simulation time.

- Generated default size mesh for remaining portion.

Analysis Settings:-
No.of Steps: 1
End Time: 0.01 s
Maximum Number of Cycles:1e+07
Maximum Energy Error: 5
Initial Time Step: Program Controlled
Minimum Time Step: Program Controlled
Maximum Time Step: Program Controlled
Boundary Conditions
Fix Support (For CASE_1, 2,& 3):
Keep bottom face of the Bucket as a fixed to hold it while the bullet is penetrating.

Velocity (For CASE_1, 2,& 3):- 139000 mm/s
Apply velocity to Bullet in the negative X-Direction as given below.

- After giving proper boundary conditions, create desired solutions for output results.

| Case_3 | 4710.8 | 1390 | 0.049071 | 3717.6 |
Conclusion
- From the results, Stress is higher in Titanium Alloy because it has the highest Density(4620 kg/mm^3) and higher young’s modulus(9.6E+10) So it is capable to resist penetration.
- Deformation is higher in Magnesium Alloy NL because it has the lowest Density(1800 kg/mm^3).
- Effect of penetration depends on the thickness and the density of the material.
