Bullet penetrating a Bucket

AIM:

  • To perform explicit analysis of Bullet penetrating a Bucket and evaluate the stress and deformation results.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

  • To assign Aluminium alloy NL for Bucket and Tantalum for the bullet.
  • To define Mesh method and Edge sizing.
  • To define Velocity and fixed support.
  • To evaluate the stress, deformation and strain in the work piece.

PROCEDURE:

  • CASE 1:
  • OPEN WORKBENCH21 > NEW PROJECT > EXPLICIT DYNAMICS.
  • This will start a new explicit dynamics project.
  • Rename the project as Case 1.
  • Go to ENGINEERING DATA > EXPLICIT MATERIALS > ALUMINIUM ALLOY NL > ADD > TANTALUM > ADD.
  • Then double click on Geometry. This will open the Spaceclaim.
  • In Space claim check the model for any dents or irregularities.
  • The geometry looks good, exit the Spaceclaim.
  • Then double click on Model. This will open Mechanical module.
  • Now, rename the geometry as bullet and bucket.
  • Then assign Aluminium alloy NL to the Bucket and Tantalum to the bullet.
  • Define GEOMETRY > BULLET > STIFNESS BEHAVIOUR > RIGID.
  • Go to Contacts and DELETE ALL CONTACTS.
  • MESH > INSERT > METHOD > GEOMETRY = BUCKET AND BULLET > METHOD = TETRAHEDRON.
  • Now, MESH > GENERATE MESH.
  • The mesh will be generated on the model.
  • Then go to STATIC STRUCTURAL > ANALYIS SETTINGS > NO OF STEPS = 1 > END TIME = 1E-2 > MAXIMUM ENERGY ERROR = 5.
  • Go to EXPLICIT DYNAMICS > INSERT > VELOCITY > GEOMETRY = PLANER BODY > X COMPONENT = -139000MM/S.
  • Go to EXPLICIT DYNAMICS > INSERT > FIXED SUPPORT > GEOMETRY = BUCKET BOTTOM FACE.
  • Then, go to SOLUTION > INSERT > STRESS > STRAIN > DEFORMATION.
  • This will set the output results.
  • Then SOLUTION > SOLVE.
  • CASE 2:
  • Create duplicate project of Case 1 and rename it as Case 2.
  • Go to ENGINEERING MATERIALS > GENERAL NONLINEAR MATERIALS > COPPER ALLOY NL > ADD.
  • Then open MECHANICAL MODULE.
  • Go to GEOMETRY > BUCKET and assign copper alloy NL material.
  • Go to SOLUTION > SOLVE.
  • CASE 3:
  • Create duplicate project of Case 1 and rename it as Case 3.
  • Go to ENGINEERING MATERIALS > GENERAL NONLINEAR MATERIALS > STAINLESS STEEL NL > ADD.
  • Then open MECHANICAL MODULE.
  • Go to GEOMETRY > BUCKET and assign stainless steel NL material.
  • Go to SOLUTION > SOLVE.

RESULTS:

  • CASE 1 (Aluminium alloy NL):
  • CASE 2:
  • CASE 3:

COMPARISON TABLE:

Stress (MPa) Strain Deformation (mm)
Aluminium alloy NL 437.89 8.1579e-3 695
Copper alloy NL 1145.9 1.6841e-2 694.99
Stainless steel NL 2873.8 1.489e-2 695

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • To setup explicit dynamics analysis for machining with planer.
  • To assign material from the material library.
  • To define mesh method and edge sizing.
  • To define velocity and fixed support.
  • To define output results.

CONCLUSION:

  • By performing this project we conclude that the analysis of bullet penetrating the bucket is performed and the stress, strain and deformation results are obtained.
