Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge (ANSYS WORKBENCH)
Aim :
To simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket with 3 different non-linear materials for the bucket and analyse their behavious for the same velocity of bullet using Explicit Dynamics in ANSYS WORKBENCH.
FILE : BULLET_PENETRATE
Materials Used :
For bucket :

For Bullet :

Procedure :
- Import the geometry into the Explicit Dynamics analysis and re-name the geometry accordingly

- While meshing the model, Face Sizing was given to the bucket to get accurate result when the bullet hits it. Face Sizing with element of 7mm was given and for the rest of the model default element size were used.

- Before the analysis was done, Fixed Support was given to the top of the bucket and a Velocity of 139 m/s was given to the Bullet in the direction of the projectile. The analysis setting is given below :

Result :
Total Deformation :
| Aluminium Alloy NL | ![]() |
| Stainless Steel NL | ![]() |
| Magnesium Alloy NL | ![]() |
Equivalent Stress :
| Aluminium Alloy NL | ![]() |
| Stainless Steel NL | ![]() |
| Magnesium Alloy NL | ![]() |
Conclusion :
| Material | Total Deformation (mm) | Equivalent Stress (MPa) |
| Aluminium Alloy NL | 371.36 | 1213.1 |
| Stainless Steel NL | 594.23 | 5115.4 |
| Magnesium Alloy NL | 4117.6 | 2466.2 |
The least stress is found in the Aluminium Alloy NL compared to the other two which justifies that the bullet will easily penerate this material.
