Challenge

Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Objective: To simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket and use 3 different non linear materials for the bucket.

Setting up the analysis: For this analysis, the non linear materials opted for are Aluminium, Copper and Magnesium alloys.

the material taken for the bullet is Tantalum

The geometry is imported and opened in ANSYS mechanical. The stiffness behaviour of the bullet is changed to rigid and the contacts are deleted as we are performing explicit dynamic analysis.

Mesh:

Face sizing option is selected and the edges at the both sides are selected where the bullet's impact is going to be there. The size is taken as 4mm

Boundary conditions:

A fixed support is used to constrain the bucket

Velocity in the negative X direction is given to the bullet

Analysis settings

Solution:

Case 1:

Aluminium alloy:

Total deformation

Stress

Case 2:

Copper alloy

Total deformation

Stress

Case 3:

Magnesium alloy

Total deformation

Stress

Result:

Material Deformation(mm) Equivalent stress(MPa)
Aluminium Alloy 242 362
Copper Alloy 268 614
Magnesium Alloy 445 534
