Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Bullet penetrating a Bucket - Simulation Using

ANSYS Workbench 2020 R2

Thejan Sasilal

OBJECTIVES

For this challenge, you will have to simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket. You will need to use 3 different non-linear materials for the bucket and analyze their behavior for the same velocity of bullet. Apply the conditions for bullet as mentioned in the video itself. Attach an animation to show the behavior in the three cases.

  • INTRODUCTION

In this challenge, we are simulating the Bullet penetrating a Bucket process to find out the impact on the Bucket surface due to the dynamics of bullet.

  • DESIGN SPECIFICATION
  1. Assign Tantalum as the materials for Bullet from engineering data.

  1. Assign following materials as the material for Bucket in each cases
  1. AL 1100-O
  2. Stainless Steel NL
  3. Structural Steel NL
  4. Copper Alloy NL

  • EXPLICIT ANALYSIS

Open Mechanical modeler for analysis.

Consider all units are in metric.

Rename geometry as given below.

3.1 COORDINATE SYSTEM

  1. Insert the two coordinate systems for both ends of the bucket as in the picture.

3.2 MESH CREATION

  1. Insert body sizing at both sides of the bucket as given below.

  1. Insert Body Sizing for the Bullet

  1. Generate Mesh as per the below given settings

3.3 ANALYSIS SETTINGS

Consider the following as the analysis settings for the tension test and torsion test.

3.4 BOUNDARY CONDITION

  1. Insert Fixed joint for the bottom of the Bucket

  1. Insert Velocity for the Bullet

3.5 SOLUTIONS

Materials

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

AL 1100-O

Stainless Steel NL

Structural Steel NL

Copper Alloy NL

Comparison

Since the velocity of the bullet is constant, In all the cases, the maximum value of total deformation is same. The deformation on the bucket due to the impact of the bullet is different. In softer materials the deformation is less as compares to superior materials.

From the analysis it is found that during this process the stainless steel NL material produces huge amount of stress. That means it is very hard to pierce this material on this operation.

Animations files are included as attachments.

  • CONCLUSSION

Simulation of Bullet penetrating a Bucket conducted with Ansys Workbench. From the analysis it is learned that to set up explicit dynamic operations.
