Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
OBJECTIVE:-
To simulate a model bullet penetrating into a bucket. We will need to use 3 different non linear materials for the bucket and analyze their behaviour for the same velocity of bullet.
PROCEDURE FOLLOWED:-
Create a new explicit dynamics model. Add 3 different Non linear materials for three different cases from engineering data. In my model I will be adding Aluminium alloy NL, Copper alloy NL, Magnesium alloy NL. Also the bullet must be tantalum.

Aluminium alloy non Linear

Copper alloy non linear

Magnesium alloy non linear

Close engineering data. Import the geometry, and open in space- claim to check for any discrepancies.

If all fine, close space claim and open the model in mechanical work bench.

Rename the geometry,

Assign material to the components, as per the case. Also the bullet must be Tantalum with stiffness behaviour be RIGID.
Delete all the contacts if any, and base points to be frictionless.

Let the mesh be default,

Analysis setting
End time = 1E-2
Max energy error =5

Assign fixed support to the bottom portion of the bucket.

Assign velocity to the bullet, the bullet will be having velocity in only –ve X- direction and no velocity in Y & Z- direction.
Velocity = 139000 mm/s(in –ve X)

List out all the output result required, total deformation & Equivalent stress.

Case 1:- Aluminium alloy NL
Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Case 2:- Copper alloy NL
Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Case 3:- Magnesium alloy NL
Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

CONCLUSION:-
The simulation is performed and the result is tabulated below
|
Total Deformation (mm) |
Equivalent stress (MPa) |
|
|
Aluminium alloy NL |
1390 |
997.29 |
|
Copper alloy NL |
1390 |
1654.9 |
|
Magnesium alloy NL |
1390 |
1590.7 |
As from the above result it can be seen that Total deformation remains the same and equivalent stress fluctuates. The equivalent stress is maximum for copper alloy NL and is minimum for Aluminium alloy NL.
