Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
AIM:
Perform Advance Structural Analysis in Explicit Dynamics on the Bucket when bullet penetrates into the bucket Using ANSYS WORKBENCH.
OBJECTIVE:
Simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket. Using 3 different non linear materials for the bucket and analyse their behaviour for the same velocity of bullet in all three cases.
GIVEN MODEL:

PROCEDURE:
i.Materials
Assign the material as Tantalum for bullet in all three cases by, Selecting the Engineering data >> Edit >> Engineering data sources >> Explicit Materials >> Tantalum.
*Properties of the Tantalum is shown in below.

CASE-1: Alluminium Alloy Non-Linear
*Properties of the Alluminium Alloy Non-Linear is shown in below.

CASE-2 : Copper Alloy Non-Linear
*Properties of the Copper Alloy Non-Linear is shown in below.

CASE-3 : Stainless Steel Non-Linear
*Properties of the Stainless Steel Non-Linear is shown in below.

ii. Mesh:

*Details of mesh generated on the model is shown in below.

*Assign Analysis settings

*Assign fixed support to bucket and Velocity to the bullet.

RESULTS:
CASE-1: Alluminium Alloy Non-Linear

EQUIVALENT VON-MISES STRESS:
MAX: 1201.4 (Mpa) and MIN: 0 (Mpa)

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:
MAX:0.01692 and MIN:0

TOTAL DEFORMATION:
MAX: 1390 (mm) and MIN: 0 (mm)

CASE-2 : Copper Alloy Non-Linear

EQUIVALENT VON-MISES STRESS:
MAX: 1990.4 (Mpa) and MIN: 0(Mpa)

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:
MAX:0.020037 and MIN:0

TOTAL DEFORMATION:
MAX: 1390 (mm) and MIN: 0 (mm)

CASE-3 : Stainless Steel Non-Linear

EQUIVALENT VON-MISES STRESS:
MAX: 2891 (Mpa) and MIN: 0 (Mpa)

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:
MAX: 0.019229 and MIN: 0

TOTAL DEFORMATION:
MAX: 1390 (mm) and MIN: 0 (mm)

COMPARING THE RESULTS:
| CASE | Non-Linear Material |
EQUIVALENT VON-MISES STRESS: (MAX) |
EQUIVALENT VON-MISES STRESS: (MIN) |
EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN: (MAX) |
EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN: (MIN) |
TOTAL DEFORMATION: (MAX) |
TOTAL DEFORMATION: (MIN) |
| 1. | Alluminium | 1201.4 | 0 | 0.01692 | 0 | 1390 | 0 |
| 2. | Copper | 1990.4 | 0 | 0.02003 | 0 | 1390 | 0 |
| 3. | Stainless Steel | 2891 | 0 | 0.019229 | 0 | 1390 | 0 |
CONCLUSION:
*Comparing all three cases stainless steel material has highest stress concentration because it has more strength than others. Stainless has more resistance to penetrate the bullet into the bucket.
*Deformation is same in all three cases because, bullet displcement and velocity is same in all three cases.
