Challenge

Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Objective - We have to simulate a bullet penetraing in bucket. Non linear material for bucket is used , Stainless steel NL, Magnesium alloy NL, Aluminium Alloy NL. We will simulate this using same velocity of bullet penetration

Procedure -

1. Open Ansys work bench and start Explicit Dynamics Analysis Systems.

2. Then we need to open engineering data source and add material Tantalum from explicit materials for the bullet and Stainless steel NL, Magnesium alloy NL, Aluminium Alloy NL for bucket from non linear material .

4. Then we would import the model and check for any irregularities in the space claim.

5. Then we would open the model in Mechanical APDL and start setting BCs

6. We will assign the material to bucket and bullet.

7. Then we will mesh it with size 6mm and in Analysis settings we will give end time as 0.1 and energy error as 5.

8. Then we will fix the bucket and give velocity to bullet 139000mm/sec.

Results and conclusion:

Max stress, stainless steel : 1746.5 MPa

structural steel : 1559 MPa

Aluminium Steel : 729.61 MPa

Max deformation, stainless steel : 1390 mm

structural steel : 2288.5 mm

Aluminium Steel : 1390 mm

So considering, stress values and deformation values, Aluminium Steel NL is the best material to withstand stress and deformation.
