Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Objective:

  • Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases.
  • From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?
  • From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

Case :1

Design a plate with a hole model similar to what we worked in the class, but with increased thickness.
Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.

Plate dimensions:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.

Procedure:

  • First open the ANSYS workbench.
  • second we have to select the static structuralanalysis and rename it plate_with_hole as shown below.
  • After that we have to right click on the engineering data which is here structural steel.
  • Then we have to right click on the geometry and click on to the new spaceclaim geometry as shown below.
  • After opening the spaceclaim we have to make the rectangle of the given dimension and then a circle at the centre.as shown below.

  • Using the options mentioned above rectangle and the circle option we have to make this geometry after that we have to use pull option and then pull the surface in z direction of 30mm thickness as shown below.

  • After the pull it looks like the above and the geometry is ready
  • Next step is to right click on the model and update it and then again right click on the model and click on the edit option and mechanical editing window will open as shown below.

  • After that in the tree side we have to follow each steps there assign the material.

  • After that we have to go to the mesh

  • Mesh this with the element size of 2mm with the tetrahedron after that it looks like the above and also see the mesh metrics graph.
  • After that we have to insert the Boundry condition under the static structural as left side is fixed and right side has tension load of 500N.
  • Then in the solution part insert the total deformation and equivalent stress.
  • Then lastly right click on the solution and click on the solve and see the results.

it is the total deformation.

it is the equvalent stress result.

Case 2:

smaller holes 90mm away from the center:

Diameter=30mm
Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.

Procedure: Here the procedure is same as above just the change in geometry and the result rest of the process is same as mentioned above so i am directly going to the geometry na dthe result.

Now directly go to the result because i had already explained al lthe procedure in the case 1

Results:

This the equivalent stress result

This is the total deformation.

Q. Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases

Answer:

cases max deformation(mm) max stress(Mpa)
case 1 0.00027492 0.60559
case 2 0.00029728 0.58133

So here the maximum stress is induced in first case where the plate with one hole and the maximum deformation is induced in second case which is plate with multiple hole.

our main objective is to reduce the stress concentration.so it is in the second case.

Q.From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

Answer:

From the analysis point of view i will select the second case plate with multiple hole,because in this case we have the multiple hole so the stress concentration will be low because of 3 hole. The main moto is to reduce the stress near the holes so it is less then first case this is why i choose the second case so as to reduce the stress concentration.

Q.From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

Answer:

From the manufacturing point of view i will select first case because here it will take less time to manufacture and also the manufacturing cost will low as compare to 2nd case and the most important is here the material loss is less as compare to 2nd case so i choose plate with 1 hole i.e, first case.

Conclusion:

Here in this challange we have to learn about the stress concentration in the plate with holes in 2 cases we have to identifie which one is batter in different conditions.
