Challenge

Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Objective:

1)Design a plate with a hole model

2)Design a plate with 3 holes model

3)Determine the Max stress,Total deformation for both the above cases

4)compare the results and suggest which is suitable design based on Analysis stand point of view and Manufacturing stand point of view.

The given dimension

case:1

length:300mm

height:120mm

thickness:30mm

center hole dia:60mm

Case 2:

length:300mm

height:120mm

center hole:60mm dia

side holes:30mm dia each.

distance of holes from center hole is 90mm each.

Boundry condition for both the cases:

Fixed support on left side(face) of plate

Load applied of 500N(tension) at the right side edge of plate.

procedure:

1)Material selection is done -through "Engineering data Tab"

2)The Geomentry is drawn as per the dimention given in case:1 through "space claim module" of Ansys WB

3)The geomentry model is then updated in "Model Tab".

4)The solid model is then meshed with Tetrahydren element type with element size of 2mm

5)Constraints is applied as "fixed support" at the left face of component and tesile force 500N is applied on the right face of component

6)finally the solver is run to solve the above defined FEA system for both the cases.

7)The following output results are acquired from solver module

a)equ. max stress value for both case1 and case2.

b)equ max starin value for both the cases

c)Total deformation value for both the cases

d)Stress intensity.

Results:

case1:

max stress:

max strain:

Total Deformation:

stress Intensity:

Case:2

Max stress:

max strain:

Toal deformation:

stress intensity:

Comparision:

Max stress(MPa)

Max strain

Total deformation(mm)

Stress intensity(Mpa)

Case:1

0.60547

3.027e-6

0.00027492

0.62166

Case:2

0.58139

2.9069e-6

0.00029728

0.59722

Conclusion:

with respect to Analysis prespective:As the max stress value of case:2=0.5813Mpa is less than 0.60547(case1) ,case2 would be selected since the stress concenration is less.

with respect to manufacturing point of view, case1 is selected because case2 require to drill 2 extra additional holes which will incurr additional manufacturing process.

In comparing the deformation values and strain values for both the cases, there is no significant difference.
