Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Aim: To design a plate with a hole and determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model using Ansys Workbench.
Software used: Ansys Workbench 2020 R2
1. Plate with a hole:
- Designed a plate with a hole in SpaceClaim and used material as Structural steel.

Mesh:
- Created a mesh for the model as follows.

- After creating a mesh, the boundary conditions were defined as fixed at the left side and applied 500 N load on the right side.
- In the solution selected Total deformation and Equivalent stress.
Results:
Total deformation:

- Maximum deformation is 0.00027493 mm
Equivalent stress:

- Maximum stress developed on the plate is 0.59453 Mpa
2. Plate with three holes:
- Designed a plate with three holes in SpaceClaim and used material as Structural steel.

Mesh:
- Created a mesh for the model as follows.

- After creating a mesh, the boundary conditions were defined as fixed at the left side and applied 500 N load on the right side.
- In the solution selected Total deformation and Equivalent stress.
Results:
Total deformation:

- Maximum deformation is 0.0002973 mm
Equivalent stress:

- Maximum stress developed on the plate is 0.57291 Mpa
Comparison:
| Maximum deformation (mm) | Maximum stress developed (MPa) | |
| Plate with a hole | 0.00027493 mm | 0.0002973 mm |
| Plate with three holes | 0.59453 MPa | 0.57291 MPa |
- From the comparison on both the cases the maximum deformation developed is in the plate with three holes, but the value difference is very small.
Conclusion:
- The yield stress of structural steel is 250 MPa. As we see there is a very big difference. I would like to suggest choose the first case as the deformation is less compared to the second case for 500 N load.
