Week 1 Spur Gear Challenge
AIM:
Objective 1:
- Case 1:
Using Cast Iron(ductile) as a material, carry out a static structural analysis to find out Equivalent stress, Total deformation and Stress intensity(Learn about what stress intensity is). Find location for possible fracture
- Case 2:
Using Cast Steel as material, perform the same analysis for the results as in Case 1.
- Case 3:
Using Cast Bronze as material, perform the same analysis for the results as in Case 1.
Objective 2:
Write a detailed report comparing the results of the three cases and conclude which material would you recommend based on these results.
Procedure:
- Open the ANSYS work Bench and we should selecet the static structural from the left side component box and draw to the panel.
-

- We should edit the Engineering Geomentry for the required given property as cast iron.
- Go the Ansys Grant material data and we should find the cast iron from the give Data.

- These are the properties of the Given cast iron ie density,Youngs modulus, possion ratios.

- After the select the proper material we should go to the geomentry and import the spur gear model from the data.

- After downloading the model we should have to rename the spur gear as right and left.
- After that we should provide the contact to the both gears.Go to connection>contact>Select the tooth of the both geomentry.

- After that we should have to create the joints to the both surface from right to left.

- we should have to provide the revolute joints to both and we should have to provide the roation to the joints with 0 dgrees to 180 degrees.

- we should also provide the moment to the model.

For the all this material stress is maximum obtained at the Tooth of the teeth.Similary the strees intensity is also measured at the Maximum deformation.
Equivalent Stress: Cast Steel>Cast Iron> Cast Bronze
Stress Intensity: Cast Steel>Cast Iron> Cast Bronze.
CONCLUSION:-
Static structural analysis was carried out successfully on spur gear having the following types of materials,
Case-1: Cast Iron
Case-2: Cast Bronze
Case-3: Cast Steel
Based on the traditional strength of materials approach i.e., from the results of Equivalent stress and Total deformation for all the cases of spur gear,
case-2: Cast bronze is the preferred choice of material.
Based on the fracture mechanics approach i.e., from the results of Stress intensity for all the cases of spur gear,
case-3: Cast steel is the preferred choice of material.
The recommended choice of material is Cast Iron.
