Challenge

Week - 1 - Consistency of units

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this challenge is to convert given quanities in different systems of units. LS-DYNA does not have its default unit system so we havae to be consistant with the units while working on it. Hence it is very imposrtant to understand the unit conversion from one unit system to another.

Given Quantities:

1) MASS 1kg
2) LENGTH 1m
3) TIME 1s
4) FORCE 1N
5) STRESS 1Pa
6) ENERGY 1Nm
7) DENSITY 1Kg/m3
8) YOUNG'S Modulus 210GPa
9) Velocity 56.33KMPH
10)GRAVITY 9.8m/s2

System Of units:

1) Kg cm ms
2) Kg cm s
3) gm mm ms
4) kg m s
5) g cm s
6) g cm us
7) g mm s
8) ton mm s
9) slug ft s
10) kg mm s
11) g cm ms
12)kg mm ms

Coversion Factors:

1) Mass

1 Kg = 1000 g.

2) Length

1 m=100 cm.=1000 mm.

3) Time

1 Sec. = 1000 mili.sec.

4) Force

we know that, F = mass* acceleration

Threfore

1N = 1kg `m/s^2`

= 1000 g `(1000mm)/s^2`

= 1000 g `(1000 mm)/(10^6 ms)`

1N = 1g `(mm)/(ms^2)`

5) Stress

We know that SI unit of stress is Pa or `N/m^2`

1Pa = 1`N/m^2`

1Pa = 1g*`(mm)/(ms^2)` * `1/(10^6 mm^2)`

1Pa = `10^-6` (g/ mm * ms^2)`

6) Energy

We know that SI unit of energy is Nm

1Nm = 1 `(g*mm)/(ms^2)` *(1000 mm)

1Nm = `10^3` `(g*mm^2)/(ms^2)`

7) Density

We know that SI unit of desnity is Kg/m^3

1 kg/m^3 = `(1000 g)/(10^9 mm^3)`

1 kg/m^3 = `10^-6 g/(mm^3)`

8) Youngs Modulus

We know that we generally specifiy 'Y' in GPa

210GPa = 210 `10^9``10^-6` (g/ mm * ms^2)`

210GPa= 210*`10^3` `(g)/(mm*ms^2)`

9) Velocity

We specify velocity in 'm/s'

56.33 KMPH = 56.33 `( 10^6 mm)/(3600*1000 msec)`

56.33 KMPH = 15.64 `(mm)/(ms)`

10) Gravity

we know that value pf 'g' =9.81 m/s^2

9.81 m/s^2 = 9.81 `(1000 mm)/( 10^6 ms^2)`

9.81 m/s^2 = 9.81 `10^3 (mm)/(ms^2)`

Here we come across one of the unit system with which we are not familier that much i.e slug ft s , slug is a measure of mass ( 1kg=0.068 slug, 1m=3.28ft)
