Underbody Coating

(UNDER-BODY COATING)

AIM:

To understand and explain in detail about Under-Body Coating for at least one page.

OBJECTIVE:

  • Write a one-pager about Under-Body Coating and its purpose, its types, and its pros and cons.

UNDER-BODY COATING:

Under-Body Coating is a coating that prevents vehicles from rust and corrosion. This Under-Body Coating has been done after the vehicle body undergoes an electrolyte bath. The Under-Body Coating is not only for preventing rust and corrosion of the outer body but also some other unpredictable factors like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion and protection from stones and water on the road which is responsible to damage the vehicle body.

  • Under-Body Coating is done in many ways like manual coating, semi-automated coating and fully automated coating.
  • The manual process is where the person sprays the coat by lifting the vehicle to an appropriate height. Nowadays this is performed by high-speed robots that ensure a thorough coating on intricate positions.

  • Another process is where the automobile frame is kept in a bath of the liquid coat. The liquid is made to fall in plenty of amounts and then the frame is allowed to get dry and the coat gets set on the frame.

Types of Undercoating

  • Rubberized Underbody Coating
  • Wax-Based Underbody Coating
  • Asphalt-Based Automotive Undercoating
  • Polyurethane Underbody Coating

Some basic steps are involved in the whole process of Under-Body Coating.

  1. Pre-treatment - to remove all the bur, oil and Welding residues etc..(removing unwanted particles).
  2. Electrodeposition - dipping into an electrolyte bath to prevent rust and corrosion.
  3. Proof material - Using PVC or urethane, seal the area that we don't want to coat.
  4. Primer - applying a premier, improve the adhesion between E-coat, Top-coat and also chipping protection etc..
  5. Top-coat - it is the final coat of the vehicle body for coloring the vehicle and all.

Advantages of Under-Body Coating:

  • Minimizes Sound: It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting a noiseless, smooth driving experience.
  • Heat Insulation: It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.
  • Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protecting the underbody from exposure to water.
  • Prolongs car's life: Because of the protection, the car's life would be more when compared to the cars which don't undergo Coating.

Disadvantages of Under-Body Coating:

  • Undercoating will not help you if corrosion already exists.
  • Need to apply frequently for at least a year.
  • It adds weight to the vehicle.
  • An undercoating is not impervious to damage. (can't able to find damage if already existed on the vehicle body)
