A car body or a BiW is constructed with several metals like steel, aluminum, etc. So as per the nature of metals, they react with oxygen & water (or air moisture) resulting in corrosion which is not favorable to the automotive industries & their customers. So, in order to prevent the corrosion a coating is applied under the body or floor to the automobile, this is called an underbody coating.

Purposes of Underbody Coating:

• Prevent the Corrosion of floor parts of sheet metals since the underbody of a car is subjected to be performed in the moisture environment.

• Act as a filler material between the spot-welded region which blocks the water to be settled between the gaps.

• Ensure the safety & integrity of the BiW from the External environments.

• Reduces the vibration of the floor sheet metal parts in BiW which reduces noise inside the cabin as a thicker coating provides damping effects between the spot-welded parts.

• Keeping up the value of the car as the integrity of the chassis gets a major role in evaluating the resale value of the car.

• To make the underfloor sheet metals mud resistance to repulse the ground dirt.

• Act as an Insulator between the Cabin & the exterior temperature to make the effective air conditioning system.

Pros:

• It provides a extra layer of protection against rust and corrosion

. It will extend the life of vehicle

• It can be applied to damaged areas

• It can be self applied

. It minimize the sound from underneath the car

• The coating doesnot chip away when hit by stones.

• It insulates the interior of the car from the extreme temperature from beneath the vehicle.

Cons:

• It won't do anything about the corrosion which is already present

• It adds weight to the vehicle

. It works best on new cars

• An under coating is not impervious to damage.

• It must be reapplied every 3 to 5years for best reasult.

• The underbody coating is expensive
