Underbody Coating
UNDERBODY COATING
A Car's Underbody is prone to corrosion. So some Underbody Coating is the coating usually done at the underbody or Chasis of the Cars to protect the car's bottom from getting corroded and also from the paint chipping off the surface.
The vehicle gets corroded due to the following reasons :
- Due to the polluted environment.
- Exposure of water.
- Due to the hitting of stones, which leads to the peeling off of paint.
- Usage of the improper composition of metals.
- Due to the water getting carried by cranny of the car.
Cars produced in some countries have no coating for the underbody, Those cars when they are exported to a country having a monsoon kind of climate can't survive in the country as the car's underbody would easily be corroded by the rainwater.
So the underbody coating is supplied by some aftermarket companies such as 3M, A thick coating of 2mm to 3mm is sprayed on the underbody of the car. Mostly a black rubberish paint is sprayed through the underbody of the car to get a completely finished look.
PROCESS OF UNDERBODY COATING
Pre-treatment process: Removes and cleans excess metal and forms an appropriate surface structure enabling bonding of a corrosion protection layer.
Electrodeposition: The BIW of the car is dipped inside the Electrodepositing chamber at a certain angle and let inside the chamber for some amount of time and removed out, this process is done according to the shape and surface of the car, So that no droplets should be left in the car.
Heating Chamber: The car is then moved to a heating chamber, where the car is dried completely using heat.
Primer Coating: The dried car is coated with primer, This is the first step of the painting process of a car.
Underbody Sealant: The Underbody of the car is sealed. Better the sealing better the quality.
Paint Booth: After sealing the underbody the car is moved to the Painting Booth, where the car is painted by the robots or else it is done in semi-automatic methods. The car is painted throughout the body of the car.
Inspection Chamber: The painted car is moved to an environment having high lighting. The car is inspected for any unpainted surfaces that can easily be found.
Benefits of Underbody Coating :
• Minimizes Sound: It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting from a noiseless, smooth driving experience.
• Heat Insulation: It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.
• Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protects the underbody from exposure to water.
