Underbody Coating

Underbody Coating

Underbody is the underside that is closet to the road. The mud, rocks, etc brushes up against the underbody of the car, which would rapidly chip ordinary paint allowing rusting to begin. To prevent it from such damage underbody coating is done.

Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is being manufactured or whenever required. Underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to cars underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

Types of Underbody Coating:

There are 4 types of underbody coating

  1. Rubberized Underbody Coating
  2. Wax Based Underbody Coating
  3. Asphalt Based Underbody Coating
  4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating

Rubberized Underbody Coating:

This is the best underbody coating when comapred with other underbody coating proces. This coating protects from scratches and easy to apply.

Wax based Underbody Coating:

This is the most cost effective method but will wear out within few months of time because of moisture. The main advantage for wax based undercoating is resistant to dampness.

Asphalt based Underbody Coating:

This type of coating is suitable for heavy vehicles like lorries and trucks, as it gives high level of protection. Asphalt based underbody coating contains little amount of rubber for sound insulation purpose.

Polyurethane Underbody Coating:

This coating provides strong corrosion resistance and also bonds with the metal. Unlike the other coating, you can paint over the polyurethane coating. This coating closes up splits and fracture on the underbody.

Advantages of Underbody Coating:

  • Fight Rust:

It plays an important role in preventing corrosion, resulting in increased cars lifespan.

  • Reduce NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) Levels:

The underbody coating consistency is so thick that the layer it creates absorbs all the unpleasant noises and vibrations and marginally improves the driving experiences.

  • Reinforcements:

If the automobile already has an underbody covering, applying another one on top of it will act as additional reinforcements providing further protection for the underbody.

Disadvantages of Underbody Coating:

  • The coating should be reapplied every 5 years for the best result.
  • The cost of underbody coating or rust proofing spray is expensive but it is nothing when compared it with the cost of replacing a vehicle after corrosion.
  • It adds weight to the vehicle.
