Underbody Coating

Underbody Coating

A vehicle's underbody is subject to wear and tear caused by elements such as stones, potholes, muddy water and numerous others. Because it isn't apparent, the owners of the cars frequently ignore all of this damage. In almost no time the car's underbody gets rusted and starts to chip off little by little. To prevent this from happening a coating is applied to the underside of the car body known as underbody coating. This shields the underbody from rust and the debris coming off-road. Giving the automobile a suitable underbody covering extends its lifespan and boosts its resale value.

Advantages

  • Rust & Corrosion Inhibitor – It prevents the rusting of the underbody by forming a barrier layer between the environment and the metal body panels.
  • Protection from Debris – When a car is moving the underbody is subjected to small stones and chips off the road and tires. Underbody coating provides a barrier layer between them, protecting the underbody of the car from these elements.
  • Sound Dampening – Some of the underbody coating solutions provide a layer of insulation which acts as sound dampeners. The tire rolling noise and the engine noise can somewhat be minimized from these. However, the coating won’t result in pure sound isolation.
  • Increase in Lifespan – Since the coating protects the vehicle from various elements, it increases the longevity of the car and also aids in increasing the resale value of the car.

Disadvantages

  • Weight Addition – The coating adds weight to the car, though a very insignificant amount, and can cause somewhat small changes in the fuel economy of the car as well.
  • Economic Aspect – The undercoating is quite expensive. The material, as well as the labour cost, add a lot of expense. The annual maintenance charges of the vehicle can also increase as some undercoating need to be reapplied after a year.
  • Tricky Application – Not all the coating processes can be done at home. They do require some experience and if the process is done wrong, it can cause an obstruction in some of the moving parts. If applied to some moving parts, the mobility of those parts can get affected disturbing the clearance of those parts.

Types of Underbody Coating

  • Rubberized Underbody Coating

It is one of the best solutions when it comes to underbody coating. Applied in a form of spray onto the underbody, drying provides a rubberized texture protecting the underbody from scratches and moisture seepage. Well suited for cars to be driven on rough terrain. Application is hassle-free and safe. This can also be applied to wheel wells and quarter panels. It can also be painted over, plus it also provides sound cushioning.

  • Wax/Paraffin-based Undercoating

It is often the cheapest and quickest option available. Preferred on cars which are highway driven. Since this type of coating never really hardens it usually drips and flows into seams. Furthermore, these are not long-lasting and typically wear off quickly and need to be reapplied about once a year. Can provide a sufficient shield for cars in humid regions.

  • Polyurethane Undercoating

Polyurethane-based sealant can be used for a quicker and easy application. It works by seeping into the cracks and seams. The moisture is displaced and forms a bond with rusty areas and protect the unoxidized metal. Compared to its counterparts it usually requires a little bit more prep work which involves sanding and etching to bare metal. It does have a long lifespan and can also be sanded easily if required.

  • Asphalt Based UNdercoating

Made of asphalt containing some traces of rubberized material to improve the sound dampening. It is having one of the best damage-resistant properties due to which it finds its use in military, trucks and all-terrain vehicles. Life span is quite long and provides durability against rocks, chips and moisture. Since it is the thickest coating available on the market it takes time to harden, increasing the curing time.

  • Petroleum Based Undercoating

It involves the application of a thick, viscous oil-based liquid product which provides shielding against corrosion and moisture. On hardening, it provides a strong durable and long-lasting protection. It has improved resistance to road salts and grime deflection, still an annual replacement is suggested.
