Structural Modelling using Etabs 2018

GIVEN THAT: The architectural drawings for a G+7 residential building in zone 5 has been provided. The floor plan is the same for all 7 floor levels. Possible column positions have also been provided. Conceptualize a framing plan layout and then model the building in Etabs. The following architectural drawings have been provided.

  • Typical floor plan – The location and thickness of the brick walls and the use of the.
space (for estimating live load) can be obtained from this plan
  • A building section through the staircase and lift core is provided
  • Parking layout in the ground floor – the column/shear wall arrangement must not
    obstruct entry/exit of vehicles.
The following loadings are to be taken into account:
  • Brickwall made of AAC blocks
  • Finishes – floor tiles of 75 mm thickness
  • Live loads as per IS 875 part 2
  • Water tank of 20 KL above the staircase at Mumty level
  • Lift Machine room at mumty level above lift core

The structural model must comply with provisions of IS 1893 and IS 13920.

Run a modal response spectrum analysis and check analysis results of the etabs model for

  • inter-storey drift requirements,vertical & planar irregularities,
  • minimum shear wall requirements,
  • maximum axial load ratio for column and shear walls,
  • effectivemoment of inertia for beams and columns etc

PROCEDURE:

  • open etabs software and open new project.
  • Choose the built-in settings option and select the display units and codes.
  • After model intialization select the grid and story inputs from the New model quick templates dialogue box.
  • In this dialogue bchoose ctom grid spacing and custom story datata which is used to provide the inputs specified above.
  • Enetr X grid data at a distance as per the drawing metre and Y grid data as per the drawing at a distance of metre.

  • Now edit the stories by using the user defined storey input,9 storeys are incorportaed( plinth at 1.5 meter height+ 9 storey with 3 meter height each).
  • Storey 1 has benn labelled as master storey and all above levels are labelled similar to that.

  • Set the longitudinal bars as HYSD500 and confiment bars as HYSD415 in the rebar materials.

  • After selecting the Modify/Show Rebar option the new tab appears, In that we select the design type as M3 Design only (Beam).
  • Next we select longitudinal bars with the grade of HYSD500.
  • Next we select Confinement bars with the grade of HYSD415.
  • After selecting the Modify/Show Rebar option the new tab appears, In that we select the design type as M3 Design only (Beam).
Next we select longitudinal bars with the grade of HYSD500.
Next we select Confinement bars with the grade of HYSD415.
  • After selecting the Modify/Show Property option, the new tab appears.
In that we need to put the slab name as Slab 125, it means slab with the thickness of 125mm.
And we take the concrete grade as M25, as shown below.
Next we have to click the ok option.
  • Using the membrane property, slab size 150mm has been addded tothe list.Mebrane property will help to consider only slab weights and floor weights in analysis of structure while no stiffness component of flange advantage are considered during calculation.
  • After the define properties for the column as 800X800 and slab thickness ass 150mm
  • After the define properties for the beam as 300X400 and slab thickness ass 150mm

  • Now draw a column of size 800X800mm at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical grid and beams with quick draw tool keeping all stories on.
  • Now draw a beams of size 300X400mm at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical grid and beams with quick draw tool keeping all stories on with quick draw option.
  • Now draw a slab of size 150mm at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical grid and slab with quick draw tool keeping all stories on with quick draw option.
  • In 3d view option Using the quick draw fllors option, all the slabs have been modelled keeping"similar stories" ON.
  • Beams drawn using quick draw beam tool keeping all the stories on
  • Select assign and click on joint select pinned support.
  • Fix he pin supports at the base

  • Next we have to add the wall properties in the wall property data, as shown below.

  • Now draw a slab of size 150mm at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical grid and slab with quick draw tool keeping all stories on with quick draw option.
  • In 3d view option
  • Using the quick draw fllors option, all the slabs have been modelled keeping"similar stories" ON.
  • Beams drawn using quick draw beam tool keeping all the stories on
  • Select assign and click on joint select pinned support.
  • Fix he pin supports at the base

  • Draw the secoundary beams by using the move option and replica option.
  • Now we go to the base plan and select all base joints.
  • Next we select the Restraints from joint option, as shown below.
  • Now we need to select the fixed joint and click on apply and then click on close button, as shown below
  • Next we need to select the load patterns from the define option, as shown below.
  • Next we need to select the distributed load from the frame loads, as shown below.
  • Then after the new tab will appear, In that we select load pattern as Brickwall, and we take uniform load as 3.5 kN/m and thenclick on the apply button and close.

  • Next we have to click on the assign option and then select shell loads, from the shell loads we select the Uniform option, asshown below.
  • Next we have to select live load reduction factors from the design option, as shown below.
  • Now we add the reduction factor by decreasing 10% from 1st floor to 7th floor, as shown below.
  • After selecting the object type option, the new tab will be visible, In that select the floors and click on the select button and close.

  • nter-storey drift requirements,vertical & planar irregularities,
  • minimum shear wall requirements,
  • maximum axial load ratio for column and shear walls,
  • effectivemoment of inertia for beams and columns etc
