Structural analysis of a buidling using Robot Structural Analysis

1) What are HVAC systems? Why are they essential in the modeling of buildings

ANSWER:

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and Airconditioning: It is a techonology of indoor environmental comfort. Its goals to provvide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.

HVAC system design is a subdiscipline of mechanical engineering, based on the principle of thermodynamics, Fluidmechanics and heat transfer.

HVAC is an important part of residentiall structure such as single family homes, apartment building, hotels and senioir living facilities, medium to large industrial and offfice building such as skyscapers and hosiptals where safe and healthy building conditions are regulated with respect to temperature and humdity.using fresh air from outdoors

HVAC system are essiential in the modelling of building because:

  • They are used for controlling the overall climate of the builiding. this means that when its warm outside its balance teh temperature etc make the inside teh coller or warmer during cold season. The air conditonor works during teh warmer days while the boilers or heaters are turned on during the warmer days while the boilers or heaters are turned on during the colder days.
  • HAVC fastre enchanced productivity in office as they feel comfortable.and when they are comfortable , their minds and body tends to function better, leading thenm to deliver better job results.
  • HVAC improves the air quality in the building, making it appropriate for human braething and comfortable. It reduces the humdity, so residents can enjoy a better amtosphere . This used in ful buildings/ underground spaces where ventilation is limited.
  • HVAC system helps you achieve more savings when it comes to energy bills. in olden times where we used fans and oldschooled air conditons and fire places to keepus warm had many limtations but noe the advancement in techonmnology has made things eaiser by making everything automatic and reducing the enegry consumption.

the robot sturcture analysis tool kit has been successfully loaded.

4) Why do we need to assess buildings/analyze while modeling elements? Does design affect modeling in anyways?

ANSWER:

Structural analysis is essential in modelling elements as is helps in calculating and determining the effects of loads and internal froces on a structure, buillding or an object. It is particurlarly important for structural enginnering to ensure that , they complete understand the load paths and the impacts the load have on their engineering design. It allows engineering or design to ensure that a piece of equipment or structure is safe for use unuder the estimated loads, it is expected to withstand.

Structural analysis can either be performef during design.testing or post construction and generally account for their material used , geometry of the structure and appiled load. structural and appiled loads. strctural analysis usally look at insividual strctural elements and forces they undergo. strcture engineer will look at the structure analysis result for bemas, slabs, cables, walls, all of these elements have forces applied to them such as windload, liveload and dead load.so it is omportant for the engineer to review how much of these elements behave under these loads.this is core focus for the structuralk analysis.

The structrural design does affect the modelling, it will hwlp the design better models and the cover issues with an xisting model and allows to incorporate the alternatives.

5) From the structural model developed in week 6 and 7, export the complete analytical model to robot structural analysis.
a. List your assumptions on what boundary conditions will be realistic for the analysis approach
b. Use the design standards to decide what loads must be applied to floorings based on the type of structure decided
c. List the load combinations and include them in the analysis model
d. Analyze the building and report the following results
i. Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations
e. After analysis, do you think you have a better approach or idea in modeling structural members?

ANSWER:

AIM:

To carry out the strctural analysis using the robot structrural analysis.

PROCEDURE:

a) Boundary conditions: It is a place on a strcture where either the external forces or the displacement are konown at the start of the analysisi. For a structural analaysis problem to solveable.every loaction on the boundaries of our structure must haave a konwn force or displacement .The known force or displacement may have same magnititude or ot may be zero. for example, if there is a location in the structure that have no exterrnal force, this would be a zero bounmdary conditon.A displacement bounmdary condition that is zero is equivalent to the structure being held in place at that location.

b) The loads that must be applied to flooring are:

  • Dead load
  • Live load
  • Wind load.

C) to list the combionations and include them in the anaylsis model.

Procedure:

  • intially open the wwek 7 asssignment in the structural template and open the analyitical model.
  • Then click on the manage tab and go ti the structral settings
    .
  • Now, structural setting dailogue box opens.
  • In this we have to do set the load combinations.

  • Now, we have set the boundary conditons.
  • For this go to analyse tab, in that choose boundary condition and provide the state as fixed.
  • Hence, the boundary conditions is defined.
  • Now, again go to the anaylse tab and choose loads and provide the loads.
  • Now, we have to proceed to analysis.
  • For this go analysis tab and select robot structural analysis.
  • Click on robot strctural anaylsis.
  • The model is opened in the robot strctural analysis.
  • Go to analysis --> loads --> automatic loads.
  • Loads will be automatically applied.
  • Now, go to analyse and run the calculation.
  • Reactions have been shown at the supports.

d)

  • Description of the reaction is provided above.

E) yes, the analyse of the model has given better approach in modelling strctural members.

RESULT:

Hence, the analysis is completed.

6) What is energy analysis and why do we need to consider it while modeling in Revit?

How does the factor of sustainability improve the quality of your design?

ANSWER:

Energy anaylsis: It is tradtional method of assessing way the energy is used in an operation invovling the physical or chemical processing of materials and the transfer and/or conservation of enrgy.

Enegry usage analysis invovles 4 principle steps.

  1. Caluction of heat loss and gain to the building spaces and to heating and cooling loads imposed upon building system.
  2. Calculation of energy addition and extraction to meet the possibilty varing temperature set points and humdity critirea.
  3. Determination of fuel requirements of primary euipments in the attempt to supply the energy demand of HVAC system.
  4. It evlautes the cost of equipments , fuels ,electricity, labour and retro fit components aganinst the alternatives of investing money in other way..

Energy simulation can help in the analysing the movement of enegry in, out and through the room and volume in building models. This this information can help desingners make better informed , cost effective decisions that improve the performance and reduce th enivornmental impacts of buildings.

Whole building enegry simulation measure respected energy use based on the buildings geometery. climate, building type, envelope properties and activate system. It takes into account ther interdepencies of the building as a whole system.

A sustainable desgin is intended to completely elimaniate negatiove enviornmenatal impacts through throughtful designs. the concept can be appiled across all feild of design such as designing buinding, regardless of application will seek incoproate enviornmental perferable outcomes such as:

  • Lower energy and water consumption throughout the enire life cycle.
  • Minimise impact on climatic change by reducing green house gas emission or migitating them through carbon neutralising activites.
  • Limit resoucrse consumpption through waste free manufacturing.
  • Following 3 principleds( recycle, reuse,reduce)
  • Look for ways to incoporiate biomimicry prnciple whenever possible.
  • Give prefernce to non toxic materials.
  • Emphasize quality and durability over price.
