Project

Stoichiometric Combustion Calculator

Aim: To calculate stochiometric combustion coefficient(a_r) for each grade of fuel. (i.e., alkane, alkene & alkyne)

For generic alkane fuel combustion process will follow below equation.

`C_m H_(2m+2)+ar(O_2+3.76N_2 )=aCO_2+bH_2 O+cN_2`

For generic alkene fuel combustion process will follow below equation.

`C_m H_2m+ar(O_2+3.76N_2 )=aCO_2+bH_2 O+cN_2`

For generic alkyne fuel combustion process will follow below equation.

`C_m H_(2m-2)+ar(O_2+3.76N_2 )=aCO_2+bH_2 O+cN_2`

Now comparing with coefficient ar value can be obtained from the following equation. Relation with stoichiometric eqn and no. of atoms will be given below.

1.Alkane:

`a_r=(3m+1)/2`

2.Alkene

`a_r=(3*m)/2`

3.Alkyne:

`a_r=(3m-2)/2`

Here

m = Number of moles of C

ar = Stoichiometric co-efficient

a = Number of moles of Carbon-di-oxide

b = Number of moles of water

c = Number of moles of nitrogen

%Defined function to get stichometric coefficient for various no. of atoms

[a1,a2,a3] = alkane_alkene_alkyne(m);

%Plots%

xlabel('No.of atoms(m)')
ylabel('Stochiometric coefficient (a_r)')
title('m vs a_r')

Step wise explanation:

  1. First 3 lines of code will be used to reset the values and clear command window, workspace and figure.
  2. Assign variable m for no. of carbon atoms.
  3. Define the function ‘alkane_alkene_alkyne(m)’ to obtain the value of stochiometric coefficient against no. of carbon atoms (m).
  4. Plot the data’s of stochiometric coefficient against no. atoms using plot command, to distinguish alkane, alkene & alkyne legend command will used to show in plots. T
  5. To represent X-axis & Y-axis in code xlabel & ylabel is used in code.
    function [ar_alkane , ar_alkene, ar_alkyne] = alkane_alkene_alkyne(m)

    ar_alkane = (3*m +1)/2;
    ar_alkene = (3*m)/2;
    ar_alkyne = (3*m -1)/2;

    end

Step wise explanation of function code:

1.Defined stochiometric coefficient variables for alkanes, alkenes & alkynes

2.Stored data in the respective output variables.

Conclusion:

Plotting of data for stochiometric coefficient(a_r) vs no. of atoms(m).

  • Stochiometric coefficient varies linearly with no. of atoms. With increase in no. of atoms stochiometric coefficient will increase.
