Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

Aim : The aim is to sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra and also provide a details about the structural drawing for the site construction and calculate the corresponding loads form the members of assumed size as per IS code.

Introduction:

  • Vastu Shastra is the Ancient Indian Science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design your home in the way that enhances positive energy
  • Our nature is abundant with powerhouses of energy sources like the Sun, Wind, Moon, Water, Earth and Fire.
  • Effect of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth's magnetic field and other such cosmic energies utilise properly to enhance the positive energy at home.
  • A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy.
  • A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of a specific energy field
  • As per their belief the science of "Vastu Shastra" controls forces of gravity and magnetic power of the earth.

Significance of Eight directions:

  • Four cardinal direction North, South, East and West
  • Four intercardinal direction North-east, North-west, South-east and South-west
  • Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various gods
  • North - Wealth
  • South - Dharma
  • West and East - Overall prosperity.

Basic principles of Vastu Shastra :

  • Shape :Rooms should be preferably be square or rectangle.
  • Room Basics :Rooms should be airy, well lit, bright and clean.
  • Home center :Centre of the house should be an empty space.
  • Stairs and Furniture :Heavy furniture should be kept in the south-west direction.
  • Water :Avoid keeping plants and water features in the bedroom.
  • Dining Table :Dining space should be near the kitchen and not near the main door.
  • Mirror placement :Mirror facing the bed is strictly not allowed. Mirrors in the bedroom need to be placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen.

Auspicious directions as per Vastu Shastra:

Kitchen:

  • South-east is the best
  • North-east to be avoided

Staircase:

  • South-west is the best
  • North-east to be avoided

Toilet:

  • North-west is the best
  • North-east to be avoided

Master Bedroom:

  • South-west is the best

Guest Room:

  • North-west is the best

Living Room:

  • North-west is the best

Over Head Tanks:

  • West is the best

Under ground Tanks:

  • North-east is the best
  • South-west to be avoided

Procedure:

Ground floor plan

Dimensions:

  • Living room:
  • Kitchen:14'5"*16'
  • Dining hall:14'5"*8
  • Pooja room:8'*6'
  • Bedroom:14'5"*16'
  • Parking:14'5"*11'
  • Washroom:4'*5"
  • Washing area:14'5"*4'5"
  • Store room:8*6

Directions

For Ground floor

  • Main door:North facing
  • Bedroom: South west
  • Living room: North west
  • Staircase: West
  • Pooja room : East

First floor plan

Dimensions:

  • Master bedroom:18'*14'
  • Wash room
  • Living room:18*23
  • Balcony:14*11
  • Guest room:14*18

Directions

For First floor

  • Guest room:North west
  • Master bedroom:South east
  • Living room: East
  • Balcony: North east

Other dimensions:

Thickness of External/Internal Wall - 230mm
Thickness of slab - 150mm
Dimensions of column - 0.3m * 0.3m
Dimensions of beam - 0.3m * .45m
Height of the wall of Ground floor - 3m
Height of the wall of First floor - 3m

Load calculations:

Dead load calculations

Dead load of a column:

Dimensions of column:0.4*0.4*0.3

Unit weight of RCC=25KN/m^3

Total volumn of the column:0.4*0.4*0.3=0.48m^3

Total dead load acting on a cloumn=Total volumn of the column*Unit weight of RCC

=0.48*25

=12KN

Dead load of a beam :

Dimensions of beam:0.3*0.45

Unit weight of RCC=25KN/m^3

Total volume of the beam:0.3*0.45=0.135m^3

Total dead load acting on a beam =Total volumn of a beam*Unit weight of RCC

=0.135*25

=3.375KN

Dead load of a slab:

Thickness of a slab=150mm

Unit weight of RCC=25KN/m^3

Total dead load acting on a slab =Thickness of a slab*Unit weight of RCC

=0.15*25

=3.75KN

Dead load of a wall:

Thickness of a wall=230mm

Height of a wall=3m

Unit weight of brick wall=20KN/m^3

Total dead load acting on a wall= Thickness of a wall*Height of a wall*Unit weight of brick wall

=0.23*3*20

=13.8KN

Live load calculations

As per IS 875:1987 (Part-2) The live loads for the Residential Buildings

  • Living Room = 2 KN/m^2
  • Bed Room = 2 KN/m^2
  • Kitchen = 2 KN/m^2
  • Dining = 2 KN/m^2
  • Pooja Room = 2 KN/m^2
  • Study Room = 2 KN/m^2
  • Wash Area = 2 KN/m^2
  • Toilet = 2 KN/m^2
  • Balcony = 3 KN/m^2
  • Staircase = 3 KN/m^2
  • Terrace = 3 KN/m^2

Wind load:

As per IS 875:1987 (Part-3) the Wind loads are calculated when the height of the building os more than 10m.

In this case the height of the building does not exceed 10m,therefore it is not applicable to calculate wind load.

Results :-

  • The plan of G+1 Floor Residential Building is prepared with consideration of Concept of Vaastu Shastra.
  • The load calculations are done as per the IS code considerations.

References and IS codes used for the design :

  • IS 875 :1987 (Part 1) for Dead load
  • IS 875 :1987 (Part 2) for Live load
  • IS 875 :1987 (Part 3) for Wind load
  • IS 456 :2000 for Reinforced Concrete
