Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code
CHALLENGE 10
- Sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to vaastu shastra and list down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction. Also assume the sizes of the structural elements and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.
Aim: The main aim of this project is to gain the knowledge about the vaastu shastra and the calculation of the loading acting on it. And also know about the various drawings that has to be provided for the construction work.
Introduction: Vaastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of the architecture and acts as a guideline to the design the house or the building in the way that the house possess the positive energy.
The various list of drawing that are provided for the construction work are as follows:
- Centerline diagram: Centerlines are grids that mark the positioning of any structural or non-structural element on-site about a coordinate on the grid. Centerlines are depicted as Dash-Short Dashed line-type in drawings. It passes through the center or in the alignment of a column, or wall, or any demarked element to reference its position according to the grid as shown. Centerline Plans are used to generalize a common grid reference for all type of related construction works
- Footing and column layout with reinforcement details: Structural drawing which has foundation notations with the dimensions (Length, Breadth, Thickness) of the column pad concerning the column placement according to the Centerline Grid markings. It also suggests the typology of the foundation to be used with any discreet specifications. Foundations are identified individually according to the coordinate on centerline grid.
- Column schedule with reinforcement details: Column Layouts are used for erecting columns on site as per project design. These are referred onto the site for marking column placement, size and specifications of details of the column design. Any column on the layout has a certain Grid Coordinate on Centerline Grid that is used as its Column Nomenclature.
- Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details: It is used for marking the Tie beam (Primary element for ‘Earthquake Resistant Structure’) which is used for connecting the columns emerging from the Sub-Structure (structure beneath the ground level) of the building. This layout gives the orientation of the Tie Beam to the column and also the Cross-section sizes with specifications of the design.
- Floor beams and slab layout with reinforcement details: It includes the layout of roof slabs concerning the corresponding beam by the Centerline Grid Markings of Columns-Beams. This involves the orientation of the roof slab and Reinforcement Bar Details to be incorporated according to Structural Design. Details like diameter and number of reinforcement bars in a defined length are mentioned in roof slab layout for structural stability.
- Lift or headroom reinforcement details: It includes the beam and the slab details of the head room which is provided above the staircases. The shear wall details that are generally provided around the lifts should be provided along with the position and the reinforcement details.
The important basic details that needs to be covered in the drawing to ease the mode of construction are as follows:
- The title and the legend section: It is required for the Introduction of the Project. It includes a Design Proposal Title with a Schematic View or Elevation depicting the design by the architect.
- It accommodates an index of all included drawings with the Designated Serial Number.
- It also provides the information like the number of revisions took, date, project name, customer, architect details etc.
- The grade of the concrete and the steel that is to be used for the construction has to be mentioned.
- The minimum cover that has to be provided for the different structural components has to be mentioned.
- The number of days after which the shuttering work can be removed as to be mentioned.
- The SBC of the soil has to be mentioned in the foundation layout.
- The scale to which the drawing is done should be provided.
Calculation of the loads acting on the building are as follows:
The thickness of the main wall is assumed to be 230mm.
The assumed lengths for the beams are as follows B1 = 13.26m, B2 = 4.42m, B3 = 5.41m, B4 = 13.26m, B5 = 29m, B6 = 29m, B7 = 29m, B8 = 29m, B9 = 13.26, B10 = 5.41, B11 = 3.43m, B12 = 5.41, B13 = 13.26, B14 = 29m, B15 = 29m, B16 = 29m, B17 = 29m
The columns are considered at all the corners of the buildings. Thus based on that the number of columns considered are 12.
The sizes of columns are assumed to be 300*450
The sizes of beams are assumed to 230*450
The thickness of slab is assumed to be 125mm
Calculation of Dead load:
The dead loads on the columns is calculated as follows:
The volume of the concrete used in one column = 0.3*0.45*3.2 = 0.432m^3
Unit weight of RCC = 25kN/m^3
The dead load of one column = 25*0.432
= 10.8kN (on each column)
Therefore the total dead load on all columns = 10.125*12 = 129.6kN
The dead load on the beams are calculated as follows:
For beam B1 = B4 = B9 = B13 = (volume of concrete*density of RCC)
=0.23*0.45*13.26*25
=34.31kN
For beam B2 = (volume of concrete*density of RCC)
=0.23*0.45*4.42*25
=11.43kN
For beam B3 = B10 = B12 = (volume of concrete*density of RCC)
=0.23*0.45*5.41*25
=14kN
For beam B5 = B6 = B7 = B8 = B14 = B15 = B16 = B17 = (volume of concrete*density of RCC)
=0.23*0.45*29*25
=75.037kN
For beam B11 = (volume of concrete*density of RCC)
=0.23*0.45*4.43*25
=11.46kN
The dead load coming from the walls on the beams are calculated as follows:
The unit weight of brick work = 20kN/m^3
The dead load of the wall = 0.23*3.2*20
=14.72kN/m
The dead load acting on the slab are calculated as follows:
The dead load acting on the slab = 0.125*25=3.125kN/m^2
Floor finishes = 1.2kN/m^2
Total dead load = 3.125+1.2=4.325kN/m^2
The dead of the slab on utility and powder room = 4.325*3.43*2.058= 30.54kN
The dead of the slab on family room = 4.325*5.41*3.355= 78.5kN
The dead of the slab on kitchen= 4.325*4.42*3.91= 74.82kN
The dead of the slab on formal living room = 4.325*5.41*5.18= 80.36kN
The dead of the slab on dining room = 4.325*3.81*4.9= 81.25kN
The dead of the slab on lift lobby = 4.325*1.83*2.9= 23.33kN
The dead of the slab on foyer = 4.325*2.51*3.2= 34.76kN
The dead of the slab on wash and store room = 4.325*4.34*2.23= 41.85kN
The dead of the slab on bed room = 4.325*3.43*3.91= 58kN
The dead of the slab on puja room= 4.325*3.81*4.9= 81.25kN
The dead of the slab on master closet room = 4.325*5.41*3.05= 71.36kN
The dead of the slab on dining room = 4.325*5.41*5.795= 135.59kN
The dead of the slab on lift lobby = 4.325*4.15*1.906= 34.21kN
Calculation of Live Load:
The live load on the kitchen, living room, bed room, bath and terrace as per IS 875 part 2= 2kN/m^2
For store = 3kN/m^2
Calculation of the wind load:
The building is assumed to be located in Bangalore. Thus the basic wind speed from IS 1893 = 33m/s
Design wind pressure = Vb*k1*k2*k3*k4
K1 = 1 (the building is considered to be designed for a life span of 50 years)
Length of the building = 29m
Width of the building = 13.26m
Height of the building = 3.2m
The building is assumed to fall under the terrain category 3.
K2 = 1
K3 = The angle of inclination of the room is assumed to be less than 3 degree = 1
Vz = 33*1*1*1 = 33m/s
Pz = 0.6*Vz^2 = 653.4N/m^2
Cpe value from the Table 4 of IS 875 part 3 can be obtained as
h/w = 3.2/13.26 = 0.24
L/W = 29/13.26 = 2.18
For 0 degree (Left to Right) for 3.2m height
Force on the columns (windward) (towards the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
= (0.7-0.5) * 14.5*0.6534 = 1.89kN/m
Force on the columns (leeward) (away from the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
= (-0.25-0.5) * 14.5*0.6534 = -7.06kN/m (away from building)
(Front to back) for 3.2m height
Force on the columns (leeward) (away from the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
=(-0.6-0.5) * 6.98*0.6534 = 5kN/m
Force on the columns (leeward) (away from the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
=(-0.6-0.5) * 6.98*0.6534 = 5kN/m
For 90 degree (Left to Right) for 3.2m height
Force on the columns (windward) (towards the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
= (-0.5-0.5) * 14.5*0.6534 = 9.47kN/m
Force on the columns (leeward) (away from the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
= (-0.5-0.5) * 14.5*0.6534 = -9.47kN/m (away from building)
(Front to back) for 3.2m height
Force on the columns (leeward) (away from the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
= (0.7-0.5) * 6.98*0.6534 = 0.907kN/m
Force on the columns (leeward) (away from the building) F = (Cpe-Cpi) A*Pb
= (-0.1-0.5) * 6.98 *0.6534 = 2.73kN/m.
Conclusion:
From the project carried out it can be concluded that the vaastu shastra plays a major role in the construction of a building especially for a residential buildings. The concept of vaastu shastra has major impact on the mind of the people. The major important drawing that has to be provided for the purpose of the construction work has to done with very precision and should contain all the required information. The loads acting on a building must be taken care for the design purpose. The effect of the loads plays major role during the life span of the structure. The loads acting on the structure should not be neglected. Thus for the purpose of design of any type of building the concept of vaastu shastra, loading and the drawings that are to be provided all very useful and provides meaningful information which would make the construction process in an easier way.
