INTRODUCTION TO VAASTU SASTRA
- Vaastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and acts as the guidelines to design your home in such a way that enhances positive energy
- Our nature is abundant with powerhouses of energies like sun, wind, moon, water, earth and fire
- Effect of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth’s magnetic field and other such cosmic energies
- A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy
- A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of specific energy field which comes under the influence of specific energy field
- Architectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house
SIGNIFICANCE OF EIGHT DIRECTIONS
- Four cardinal directions like North, South, East and west
- Four intercardinal direction like North east, North west, South east, South west
- Each direction signifies an aspects of life and is governed by various gods
- North – Wealth
- South – Dharma
- West and East – Overall prosperity
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF VASSTRU SHASTRA
Shape:
Rooms should be perfectly square or rectangle
Room Basics:
Rooms should be airy, well lit, bright and clean
Home Centre:
Centre of the house should be empty space
Stairs and Furnitures:
Heavy Furnitures should be kept in south-west direction

- A traditional home in Kerala always have courtyard at center
- This part should be free and clutter free
- The placement of kitchen, bathroom or pillar/beam attracts negative energy
PROCEDURE
SKETCH OF GROUND FLOOR PLAN:

Dimensions of Ground Floor:
- KITCHEN - 4m*4m
- TOILET - 2.5m*4m
- WASHROOM - 3.5m*4m
- POOJA ROOM - 3m*4m
- MASTER BED ROOM - 4m*3.5m
- DINING HALL - 3.2m*3.2m
- GUEST ROOM - 4.5m*5.2m
- STORE ROOM - 3m*4m
- PARKING AREA - 9.45m*3m
- STAIRCASE - 3m*3m
- DRAWING ROOM - 4m*4m
SKETCH OF FIRST FLOOR PLAN:

Dimensions of Ground Floor:
- BEDROOM 1 - 5m*4m
- TOILET - 3.5m*4m
- TERRACE - 10m*4m
- STORE ROOM - 3m*3.5m
- BED ROOM 2 - 3m*5m
Other Dimensions:
Thickness of Interior/Exterior wall - 0.23m
Thickness of slab - 0.25m
Dimension of Column - 0.35m X 0.35m
Dimension of Beam - 0.3m X 0.45m
Height of Wall at ground floor - 3.5m
Height of Wall at First floor - 3.5m
CALCULATION OF LOADS:
1. CALCULATION OF DEAD LOADS
a. DEAD LOADS OF COLUMNS:
- Dimensions of columns = 0.35m X 0.35m (350mm X 350mm)
- Height of the column = (Slab thickness X 2) + Height of wall at ground floor + Height of the wall at first floor
= (0.25X2) + 3.5m +3.5m = 7.5m
- Total volume of one column = 0.35*0.35*7.5 = 0.91 m3
- Unit weight of R.C.C = 25 KN/m3
- Dead Load of One column = Volume of column * Unit weight
= 0.91 * 25
= 22.96 KN
b. DEAD LOADS OF BEAMS:
- Dimensions of Beam = 0.3m X 0.45m (300mm X 450mm)
- Total volume of one Beam per meter length = 0.3*0.45*1 = 0.135 m3
- Unit weight of R.C.C = 25 KN/m3
- Dead Load of One Beam = Volume of Beam * Unit weight
= 0.135 * 25
= 3.375 KN
c. DEAD LOADS OF SLABS:
- Slab is always designed for the span of 1 m2, hence assume the Size as 1m * 1m
- Thickness of the Slab = 0.25 m
- Unit weight of R.C.C = 25 KN/m3
- Total volume of Slab per meter length = 0.25m*1m*1m = 0.25 m3
- Dead Load of One Slab = Volume of Beam * Unit weight
= 0.25 * 25
= 6.25 KN
d. DEAD LOADS OF WALLS:
- Thickness of External / Internal walls = 0.23m (230mm)
- Unit Weight of Brick masonry = 20 KN/m3
- Height of Ground floor = 3.5 m
- Dead load at ground floor wall per unit meter length = Volume of wall per unit length * Unit weight of Brick = 3.5 * 0.23 * 1 * 20
= 16.1 KN
- Height of First floor = 3.5 m
- Dead load at First floor wall per unit meter length = Volume of wall per unit length * Unit weight of Brick = 3.5 * 0.23 * 1 * 20
= 16.1 KN
- Total weight of both ground floor and first floor wall per unit meter length = 16.1 + 16.1 = 32.2 KN
2. LIVE LOAD CALCULATIONS
As per IS – 875 PART 2, for residential buildings are,
|
RESIDENTIAL TYPE & LIVE LOADS |
|
Living Room - 2 KN/m3 Dining Room - 2 KN/m3 Kitchen - 2 KN/m3 Bed Room - 2 KN/m3 Wash Room - 2 KN/m3 Toilet - 2 KN/m3 Store Room - 2 KN/m3 Terrace - 3 KN/m3 Staircase - 3 KN/m3 |
3. WIND LOAD CALCULATIONS
- If the Height of the building is more than 10m then Wind load has to be designed.
- If less than 10m, then Design of wind load is not required.
Names of structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction are:
