Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

Q: Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

Answer:

INTRODUCTION

Structural loads are important considerations in the design of buildings and these are the forces applied to the structural components. The excess load may cause structural failure. Building codes require structures to be built to safely resist all forces during their service life. In India, Vastu Shastra is also an important criterion during the design of residential buildings. Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design our home in a way that enhances positive energy. This project outlines how a residential building can be designed based on Vastu Shastra and how the loads on the structural components can be calculated based on IS standards.

AIM

This project aims to design a G+1 residential building according to Vastu Shastra and calculate the loads as per IS standards.

VASTU SHASTRA COMPLIANCE

As per Vastu shastra

  • Room shape should be square or rectangle, therefore all rooms in the current project are either square or rectangular
  • The Center of the house should be an empty space, hence in the design, it is kept empty.
  • Rooms are kept airy, well lit, bright and clean by providing enough windows and doors.
  • The entrance of the house should be preferably in the North, East or North-east direction, hence the entrance of the current project is provided in the North direction.
  • The living room should be preferably in the East, West, North-east or North-west direction, hence foe the current project living room is provided in the North-east direction.
  • The Master bedroom should be preferably in the South-west direction and the north-east direction should be avoided, hence for the current project the master bedroom is provided in the South-west direction and other bedrooms are provided avoiding the North-east direction.
  • The kitchen should be provided preferably in South-east direction and North-east direction should be avoided, hence for the current project the kitchen is provided in the South-east direction.
  • Toilets should be provided preferably in North-west direction and North-east direction should be avoided, hence for the current project 2 toilets are provided in North-west direction and the third one is in South-west direction.
  • The staircase should be provided preferably in South-west direction and North-east direction should be avoided hence for the current project the staircase in provided in the west direction.
  • Pooja room should be preferably in the east or North-east direction, hence for the current project, it is provided in the east direction.

LOAD CALCULATION

BUILDING SPECIFICATIONS

  • All columns are 230 mm x 230 mm
  • All beams are 230 mm x 300mm
  • Slab thickness for the ground floor and first floor is 125mm
  • The thickness of the wall 230mm
  • The height of the wall on the ground floor and first floor is 3.6 m

1. DEAD LOAD

COLUMNS

Volume of one column= 0.23 x 0.23 x 3.6 = 0.19m3

Unit weight of concrete= 25KN/m3

Dead load of one column= 0.19 x 25 = 4.76KN

There are 15 columns in the ground floor

Therefore, Total Dead load for 15 columns in ground floor = 4.76 x 15 = 71.415KN

There are 11 columns on the first floor

Therefore,Total Dead load for 11 columns in first floor = 4.76 x 11 = 52.371KN

Therefore, total dead load of columns =71.41 + 52.37 = 123.786KN

BEAMS

Crossectional area of the beam= 0.23 x 0.3 = 0.069 m2

Unit weight of concrete= 25KN/m3

Dead load of beam per unit length = 0.069 x 25 x 1 = 1.725 KN/m

WALL

Height of the wall = 3.6 m

The thickness of the wall= 230mm

Unit weight of brick wall= 20KN/m3

Dead load of the wall per unit length = 20 x 3.6 x 0.23 x 1= 16.56 KN/m

SLAB

Thickness of the slab = 125mm

Unit weight of concrete= 25KN/m3

Dead load of the slab per unit area =25 x 0.125 x 1 x 1 = 3.125 KN/m2

LIVE LOADS

As per IS 875: 1987 (Part 2 ) Table 1 following are the live loads in the current building project.

  • The live load for bedroom, living room, dining room, pooja room, sit out, bathroom & Kitchen = 2KN/m2
  • The live load for storeroom = 3KN/m2
  • The live load for corridor, balcony and terrace area = 3KN/m2
  • The live load for staircase = 3KN/m2

WIND LOAD

Wind load is considered in the design when the height of the building is more than 10m. For the current project, the height of the building is 8.65m. Therefore wind loads calculations are not considered in this project.
